Scott Kurtz and PvP leave Image Comics

Scott Kurtz has announced that he is leaving Image Comics and Diamond Comic Distributors to return to self publishing with the next collected volume of PvP.

“Over the last three years our business has shifted,” says Kurtz. “Sales through brick-and-mortar stores are declining and online sales are increasing. Readers who discovered PvP in comic shops have shifted from monthly readers to online readers, and their buying habits have changed. The monthly floppy is selling less and the trade paperbacks are selling more.”

Kurtz was with Image Comics for eight years, but future releases will come from his own Toonhound Studios banner.

“Image has been an amazing publisher. Jim Valentino believed in Webcomics before anyone else in the industry. Erik Larsen and Eric Stephenson were instrumental in helping PvP shine. I still believe that Image is the best game in town for independent creators. I’m proud to continue offering my existing trades through them,” says Kurtz.

All previous collected volumes of PvP are still available from Image Comics, but say good-bye to single issue collections that have sold through the company for years.

28 Days of Geek Giving: Skull the Troll: Around the World 2010 Calendar

Here’s a great gift that goes to a good cause.  Scott Kurtz has announced a 2010 wall calendar that features the plush version of his Skull the Troll at various locations around the world.

Over the last three years Gary Arndt has been traveling with Skull the Troll to over 60 countries around the world. It has been an adventure of a lifetime, and Skull has been with Gary every step of the way.

While this is a really nice calendar for fans of the web comic series, the $19.95 purchase actually goes to a good cause.  100% of the proceeds on the sale of the calendar go to support the American Assistance for Cambodia program, that will build a school, provide drinking water, and medical treatment for children in Cambodia.  It’s a great way of helping those who don’t have a lot.

PvP Gets Own Booth at Comic Con

Scott Kurtz has posted infor about his appearance at the 2007 San Diego Comic Con.  We already posted info on who are honored guests, but Scott is taking it a step further and getting his own booth.

We’re going to have our own booth (we won’t be set up with Image) and we are planning to make it our biggest splash in San Diego ever. We can spend more on the booth and stuff since we don’t have to worry about paying for airline tickets and hotel rooms.

It’s a real honor and we’re very excited about next year. We’ve been planning San Diego 2007 since before San Diego 2006 even started.

2007 is going to be wicked cool, guys.

Right on Scott!  Congrats, and looking forward to seeing you there.

Scott Kurtz Does Batman

Scott Kurtz, the genius behind PvP, kind of participated in the 24 Hour Comic Book Day.  I say kind of, because he did take a break to go home and sleep before continuing.  In years past, he workd on PvP strips only.

So this year, I was up for about 10 hours, went home and slept, then got up and returned to the store to hang out for another 4-5 hours. I didn’t get as much done, but I’m much happier this year for having taken the break.

This year he made an attempt at doing a long Batman story.  In 12 panels, he pretty much sums up Batman’s anger in the story “My Parents are Dead”.

I like Kurtz’s styling of Batman, and wonder what he would have come up with had he had a long time to dwell on it.  Regardless, me likey… It is too bad, DC ended their run on Solo, would have been fun to see what Scott would have come up with.
You can read Scott’s attempt here.
