Ultimates 3 Covers Revealed

Ultimates3HEROESpicon.jpg

One of my students asked me when the next Ultimates series was going to be released, and now I can tell him – December 05, 2007. I’m included in the number of fans that liked the series, and the third looks like it is going to be a smash.

Such a smash that Marvel is releasing two gatefold covers that connect into one giant panoramic shot.

“When we first talked about how to launch Ultimates 3, we wanted something that both the retailers and the fans could sink their teeth into,” explained award-winning writer Loeb. “I’d been a huge fan of Joe Mad’s Uncanny X-Men #350 with that triple-gatefold and it’s hardly ever done anymore. But since we’re in the Ultimates it had to be even bigger than that! Working with Chris Lightner’s magic digital inks and colors, Joe created TWO covers — HEROES and VILLAINS all rushing toward each other. And when you put them together it makes one massive poster. So much so, that Marvel is releasing them as posters! We also wanted to thank you all for being patient while we put this together properly. Joe and Chris are at the height of their game and having been away from comics for a few years, these Hall of Famers have returned with a vengeance. Go Ultimates!”

The Dark Crystal Returns!

legendsofthedarkcrystalpico.jpg

Oh man, I loved watching The Dark Crystal when I was a kid. It had the right mix of fantasy, horror, and action that kept a young lad like myself entranced for hours.

TokyoPop and The Jim Henson Company have teamed up to release a new graphic novel based on the movie, and it’s coming this holiday season!

Legends of The Dark Crystal: The Garthim Wars, the all-new manga prequel to The Dark Crystal, Henson’s classic tale of good vs. evil. Written by Barbara Randall Kesel (Meridian), with illustrations by Heidi Arnhold & Max Kim and a special cover painted by Jae-Hwan Kim (Warcraft, War Angels, King of Hell), Legends of The Dark Crystal: The Garthim Wars provides a unique opportunity to further explore this unparalleled world,manga-style!

According to both companies, this is a project that is taken quite seriously on both sides, so I can’t imagine this graphic novel being a stinker.

The Circle Brings the Espionage

fullcirclepicon.jpg

Image Comics has announced writer Brian Reed and artist Ian Hosfeld will be launching their first creator-owned book, The Circle, this November.

“It’s in the vein of the classic TV show Mission: Impossible, or The Man From U.N.C.L.E., and somewhat inspired by the fantastic long running comic strip Modesty Blaise,” said Reed in a prepared statement. “The Circle is a group of freedom fighters that first formed amidst the horrible civil wars in the Baltics during the late 1990′s, and today operate as guns for hire.”

Change the Past and Save the Future in New Image Book

This November, Image Comics will release a new four-issue miniseries written by Nightly News writer Jonathan Hickman.

While THE NIGHTLY NEWS was a gripping, media-centric thriller with an edgy political slant, Hickman is best known for utilizing an art style consisting of double page spreads which married traditional comic art with elements of graphic design. With PAX ROMANA, Jonathan will again be pushing the boundaries of storytelling while telling the tale of 5,000 men sent on an impossible mission to change the past and save the future.

Gotta love time travel stories!

The full color miniseries bows November 28th for $3.50.
