Even as a big Bat-fan, every so often I have to give the Man of Steel his due!
Now that Superman is going where no longjohns-wearer has gone before – 80 years of being published – it’s time to talk about Big Blue!
Recently I heard that there was some unfortunate news about Wizard World’s cons, a group I used to get to quite frequently. However, I haven’t been to one in months, so I guess I shouldn’t have been surprised by what I read.
A few days ago, Marvel brought us the news that Marvel’s “First Family” was coming back to monthly comics. When they first faded away back in 2015, I wrote a column that I was fine with them taking a break until the House of Ideas put together a concept that would be worth the time and money. I’m hoping they’ve made that happen.
This past weekend, I was attending SC Comic Con at the TD Convention Center in Greenville, South Carolina. I’d never been to a comic convention in this state before, so I was curious to see how this went.
I often like to say that there are no bad characters, only bad treatments of them.
Well, a favorite hero of mine, Hawkman, is soaring back into DC this June. And I couldn’t be happier!
It’s probably no secret by now that both ComiXology and Marvel have begun their own “unlimited” digital comics services, each adding new books on a regular basis. Granted, ComiXology has comics from several companies, and it’s no surprise to anyone that the House of Ideas offers their own products. They are, however, working together on some levels. I’m conflicted when it comes to these services. Let me tell you why.
I rarely talk about Diamond two weeks in a row, but I came across a story indicating that, like Marvel and Image, DC is pulling their part of the Previews out of that monthly publication some of us refer to as “the phone book” because of its immense size.
As this column continues to examine the state of the comics industry, I often find myself looking at steps being taken to try and keep local comics shops alive. The latest one was recently discussed by site Head Honcho Stephen Schleicher as he examined Diamond Announcing a Pull and Hold Service. You know what? If it works, I’m all for it!
Once again, I must apologize for being late with this column. I was in Kansas City for Planet Comicon, which I enjoyed greatly, but con crud caught up with me as I was heaving 40-pound boxes in the bitter cold. I was doomed! Since then, however, Marvel has yet again decided to give their books another new start.
One of the best-attended panels was about the upcoming Marvel Black Panther film, due to be released this weekend!
I’m hoping it will be a big success, revive the character’s comics, and also improve the company’s diversity.
It wasn’t that long ago that I often used to leave my local comics shop with an empty wallet and the back seat of my car full of comics-related items that I treasured. These days, I pretty much buy only comics. I spend each week about half of what I used to on maquettes, statues and figures. (The exception is those terrific Batman: The Animated Series figures and vehicles, of course!) What happened? Where did they go?
As previously mentioned here in an article and here in another piece at MajorSpoilers.com, Superman’s red trunks are coming back! It will take place in Action Comics #1000.
However, as you can see by the reactions even to that latter article, not everyone is happy this is taking place.
Let me give my two cents on this subject!
I’ve been a comics fan for a looooonnnnnnggg time, and one of the things I’ve always enjoyed has been arriving at my local comics shop and picking up the newest titles on Wednesday, the day they’re released. Apparently, that’s a dying practice!
