RETRO REVIEW: Omega The Unknown #10 (October 1977)

Or – “Another Of My Transformative Comic Book Experiences…”

My work-week is a strange and freakish sort of thing, changing random in terms of hours, days off, stress level and general need for attention, and is the equivalent of herding cats in a firestorm while wearing a cotton-candy suit and being chased by hungry mandrills.  As such, I try to use Sunday as a decompressive day, a moment where I can think about something (or, indeed, about nothing, if necessary) and evaluate meaningful things.  The Retro Review is basically my forum to say, “Hey, did you guys read this excellent comic I have?”  As such, I thought I might share with you one of the first books that I encountered that really grabbed me and made me think about the meaning and the possibilities of the art form.  And, naturally, if you know me, you know damn well it was written by Steve Gerber…

Rapid-Fire Reviews III: This Time It’s Personal!

Or – “Comics Move Pretty Fast. If Ya Don’t Slow Down Once In A While, You Could Miss ‘Em.

So, how YOU doin?  When I joined the intrepid staff here at Stately Spoilers Manor, I was a carefree young lad, temping at a dog food company and literally finding myself with hours at work to stare into space.  Ahh, those were the heady days of cafeteria food and three-a-day reviews.  Now that I have a *real* job, my first in several years, I’m horrified to find that I have to spend 8 or 9 hours per day ACTUALLY WORKING.  Uncool, to say the least.  But, the faithful Spoilerites continue to call their siren call, and the review pile continues to expand like the waistline of an Atlantic City call girl (those all-you-can-eat buffets can really add up.)  Thus, I bring you another episode of…  RAPID FIRE REVIEWS!

The Mylar Smackdown: Omega The Unknown #1

Or – “The Sentry Wasn’t Marvel’s FIRST Answer To Superman…”

Omega13.jpg

It’s been a week or two since the first issue of the “reimagining” of Omega The Unknown came out, and I’ve been perusing what some of the other internet wags and comic store customers (Gatekeeper Hobbies! Huntoon and Gage, Topeka! Ask about our Clearance Table, approved by the Thunder God himself!) and it seems like most of the discussion is about how the book compares to it’s predecessor. Indeed, at least one of the online reviews seems as much a review of Steve Gerber’s 1975 Omega #1 as it was Jonathan Lethem’s 2007 Omega #1, which set my mental wheels in motion, and thus was born the first-ever “MYLAR SMACKDOWN.” In this corner, weighing in 4.9 ounces, wearing the yellow cover with the chipped corner… Omega The Unknoooooown! And, in this corner, weighing 4.2 ounces, wearing a strange mauve cover with a hand-drawn logo… Omeeeegaaaaa The Unknooooown! For the dozens in attendance, and for the couple dozen reading this at home…
