Image Entertainment and Universal Pictures are teaming up to bring The Strange Adventures of H.P. Lovecraft to the big screen.  I’m a huge fan of H.P. Lovecraft, and while I’m excited about this news, it is more interesting that Universal made the announcement two weeks before the comic book hits the shelves. Created by Mac Carter and Jeff Blitz, book borrows elements from Lovecraft’s life, such as his family’s struggle with mental illness and his own bouts with writer’s block, and transforms the young writer’s darkest nightmares into reality when he comes across a book that puts a curse on…

Universal pictures has picked up the rights to develop a movie based on Mattel’s action figure, Major Matt Mason.  While another toy movie may not sound like a big deal, with Tom Hanks starring in the movie, it will probably get a lot more attention than the Stretch Armstrong movie. The toy line originated in 1966; Mason led an astronaut team that worked on the moon and lived in a space station. The toy was a hit in the buildup to the first manned moon mission. Mattel retired the line in the 1970s. Hanks and Gary Goetzman will produce with…

The Sci Fi Channel has announced it will bring its own take on the classic comic book character The Phantom to the small screen in 2010.  Moonstone Books currently publishes the print adventures of the ghost that walks, but Sci Fi thinks a four hour movie will be pretty kick-ass. “That there hasn’t been a successful ‘Phantom’ leaves the door wide open for us, since nobody has made it their own yet,” said Robert Halmi Jr., president and CEO of RHI entertainment. “The four-hour format allows us to command large dollars around the world for our shows that puts about…

The man who could take a bunch of raincoats and turn them into a hot-air balloon is headed to the big screen.  New Line has picked up the rights to develop the genius with a mullet as a feature film.  Currently, no writer is attached, but Raffaella De Laurentiis is producing. One wonders how popular MacGyver would be as a feature film, but thanks to Superbowl ads, and Saturday Night Live, there is a resurgence in interest.  Why just the other day, I was talking to two young’uns who were born after 1992 (the year the television series ended), and…

The first arc of the Superman/Batman series by Jeph Loeb and Ed McGuinness has been confirmed by several online sources as the next DC animated feature to follow Green Lantern: First Flight. If the animated film is true to the series, it will feature President Lex Luthor framing Batman and Superman as enemies to the world as a Kryptonite asteroid heads toward Earth.  He then offers up a one million billion dollar reward to bring the two in.  This then leads to giant rocket ships, Captain Atom and Hawkman making appearances, and concludes with Luthor in his famous green armored…
