Major Spoilers Question Of The Day: Dang Ol Ah Tell You Whut Edition

The first impressions of Pixar’s newest film, Brave, are rolling in, and many of them tend to fall in the realm of “I’m glad Cars 2 was an aberration!” or “Pixar has their groove back!”  Major Spoilers very own Stephen has repeatedly remarked that the plot of C2 was basically the plot of “A Man Called Flintstone,” which affected the quality, but the plot of the original Cars was basically that of the Michael J. Fox vehicle (pun fully intended) “Doc Hollywood.”  For my part, Cars 2 was an okay story, with nice performances by Michael Caine and Eddie Izzard, and some nice auto-industry in-jokes, and while it wasn’t Pixar’s best, it certainly wasn’t awful…

The MS-QOTD (pronounced, as always, “misquoted”) reminds us that Jack Kirby also created The Black Racer, asking:  Was Cars 2 really that bad, or was it just not up to Pixar’s usual standards?

NOTHING can stop The Juggernaut.

NOTHING can move The Blob.

The MS-QOTD (pronounced, as always, “misquoted”) wonders why the original X-Men fought so many poor souls with body image issues, asking:  Immovable Object or Unstoppable Force?

Major Spoilers Question Of The Day: No Kill Quite Like Overkill Edition

Among the great joys of pop culture come those wonderful moments where the creators pull out all the stops and abandon reason to deliver a spectacularly unnecessary but completely awesome moment.  The Venture Brothers cartoon delivers these about twice a season, and I am still awed at the sight of 199 superheroes (or, even more impressive, 199 stuntmen/suit actors) in action in the Super Sentai 35th Anniversary movie.  It’s the equivalent of a live-action Crisis On Infinite Earths, a truly mind-blowing moment in the annals of superhero films.

The MS-QOTD (pronounced, as always, “misquoted”) never misses a chance to use a picture of the Power Rangers, asking:  What’s the most awesomely overblown, over-the-top, bombastic Crowning Moment of Awesome ever?

Major Spoilers Question Of The Day: Herb Tarlek Memorial Edition

Recently, Marvel Comics has gone to great lengths to deliver an in-universe 616 version of Nick Fury that resembles the one seen in the movies (i.e., looking like Samuel L. Jackson instead of Napoleon Solo.)  The only real carry-over between the two characters is Nick’s eyepatch, which got me thinking about the visual cues that make a character who they are.  Batman’s 1990′s Azrael variant doesn’t say Batman to me, even with the cowl ears, but the all-black variant does, because it keeps the scalloped gloves from the original design, a key indicator of “Batman” for my eye.  Even The Doctor, known for changing his entire BODY, has trademark bits, though they vary by incarnation: the velvet smoking jacket, the bow tie, the ridiculous scarf, the even more ridiculous coat, the brainy specs and the question mark motif on his lapels and his umbrella.

The MS-QOTD (pronounced “Miz-rah-hee”) wants to let you know that those shoes DO NOT go with that outfit, asking:  Which iconic accessories do you find absolutely necessary for the character to be “done right?”

TOP TEN: Reasons an Alien Invasion is better than a Zombie Apocalypse

Mysterious ships are being totted around by the military. Faces are being eaten off by humans. These certainly are the times we have secretly dreamed would happen. Most of you probably have a rudimentary idea of what you would do if a zombie apocalypse broke out, or signs pre-made to welcome extra-terrestrials to our world. But if I had to choose between invasion, or the dead coming back to life, I’m going with ET every time. And here I present my Top Ten reasons why.

Major Spoilers Question Of The Day: Rude And Not Ginger Edition

It’s a common belief among the Doctor Who fans I interact with that the first Doctor you encounter tends to be your favorite.  This explains my great fondness for the Fifth Doctor, the incumbent when I began watching the show in the early 80s, as well as my daughter’s crush on Matt Smith, whom she calls “the one with the silly eighties hair.”  Over the last decade or so, though, my love for Five has been joined by a broadening appreciation of his successor, The Sixth Doctor, a character that got the shaft for a number of creator-driven reasons, and whose tenure was cut short by executive meddling.  While Five will always be ‘My Doctor,’ I admire the underdog tenacity of Six, and have even begun to appreciate the reasoning behind his costume, a visual cue to the chaos of this Doctor’s psychological workings.

The MS-QOTD (pronounced, as always, “misquoted”) reverses the polarity of the neutron flow, asking:  Which incarnation of the Doctor is the most underrated?
