Another week has come and gone, as we begin the slide to the back half of 2012. The San Diego Comic Con is just around the corner, and news is pouring in. But besides all the teases, there are a number of stories that were the highlight of the week that was.

The recent announcement of the SDCC-exclusive Jem doll (excuse me, “action figure”) is intriguing to me, as I have only recently begun watching the show, 30 years late. When I was a young’n, Jem was “for girls” and no self-respecting Transformers fan would watch it. Ironically, I find both the animation AND story of Jem to be superior to those first seasons of TF. Marvel has made their official announcement of the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy movie, and given the appearance of a certain Titanian in another of their movies, I wonder if there might be some tie-in to the rest of the cinematic Marvel Universe. But, more importantly, there have been quite a few Guardians to choose from since their debut in 1968. Probably the most wonderful story to come out of Nerdtacular for me was the saga of the Critical Hit crew (minus myself and Adriana, to both of our disappointment) and their visit to a fast food restaurant which shall remain nameless. Among the great joys of pop culture come those wonderful moments where the creators pull out all the stops and abandon reason to deliver a spectacularly unnecessary but completely awesome moment. The Venture Brothers cartoon delivers these about twice a season, and I am still awed at the sight of 199 superheroes (or, even more impressive, 199 stuntmen/suit actors) in action in the Super Sentai 35th Anniversary movie. It’s the equivalent of a live-action Crisis On Infinite Earths, a truly mind-blowing moment in the annals of superhero films.
