Another week has come and gone, as we begin the slide to the back half of 2012.  The San Diego Comic Con is just around the corner, and news is pouring in. But besides all the teases, there are a number of stories that were the highlight of the week that was.

The recent announcement of the SDCC-exclusive Jem doll (excuse me, “action figure”) is intriguing to me, as I have only recently begun watching the show, 30 years late.  When I was a young’n, Jem was “for girls” and no self-respecting Transformers fan would watch it.  Ironically, I find both the animation AND story of Jem to be superior to those first seasons of TF.  Having a girl child, I find myself fascinated by what she likes and doesn’t like in terms of her pop culture, and am at least a little bit pleased to find that her favorite shows aren’t…

Marvel has made their official announcement of the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy movie, and given the appearance of a certain Titanian in another of their movies, I wonder if there might be some tie-in to the rest of the cinematic Marvel Universe.  But, more importantly, there have been quite a few Guardians to choose from since their debut in 1968.  For me, it wouldn’t be a GoTG movie without Groot and Rocket Raccoon (presuming they go with the latest incarnation) or Nikki and Starhawk (if the go with the originals.) The MS-QOTD (pronounced, as always, “misquoted”), bands together from…

Probably the most wonderful story to come out of Nerdtacular for me was the saga of the Critical Hit crew (minus myself and Adriana, to both of our disappointment) and their visit to a fast food restaurant which shall remain nameless.  Like Stephen says, if you’re not following us on Twitter, you’re not getting the full Major Spoilers experience. The delicate balance between food and our shared hobby is a troublesome one, as I learn every Sunday morning as I search for the perfect balance between sorting/bagging comics and breakfast.  (My boss was both impressed and appalled when I was…

While merging on the freeway yesterday, I began to think about the promises made to us by science fiction about the future, and how the d-bag in the Prius could have killed me much more efficiently in a Flying Car than he could with his mere two-dimensional crappy driving.  Sure, a flying car would be cool, but given that my Chrysler’s brakes are grinding and squeaking like the cell doors at Azkaban Prison, I’m certain my theoretical flying car would be equally ill-maintained and hazardous to life and limb, balancing any George Jetson thrills with the occasional plunge to Earth.…

The first impressions of Pixar’s newest film, Brave, are rolling in, and many of them tend to fall in the realm of “I’m glad Cars 2 was an aberration!” or “Pixar has their groove back!”  Major Spoilers very own Stephen has repeatedly remarked that the plot of C2 was basically the plot of “A Man Called Flintstone,” which affected the quality, but the plot of the original Cars was basically that of the Michael J. Fox vehicle (pun fully intended) “Doc Hollywood.”  For my part, Cars 2 was an okay story, with nice performances by Michael Caine and Eddie Izzard,…

Among the great joys of pop culture come those wonderful moments where the creators pull out all the stops and abandon reason to deliver a spectacularly unnecessary but completely awesome moment.  The Venture Brothers cartoon delivers these about twice a season, and I am still awed at the sight of 199 superheroes (or, even more impressive, 199 stuntmen/suit actors) in action in the Super Sentai 35th Anniversary movie.  It’s the equivalent of a live-action Crisis On Infinite Earths, a truly mind-blowing moment in the annals of superhero films. The MS-QOTD (pronounced, as always, “misquoted”) never misses a chance to use…
