Back in my college days, my roommate Otter Disaster used to work at the local arcade in the mall, allowing us access to the latest incarnations of the Mortal Kombat franchise as they arrived (as well as some scary older games that always smelled like melted plastic.)  In retrospect, that might be the origins of my fascination with the “Finishing Move,” as it pretty much predates my twin obsessions of wrestling and Super Sentai/Power Rangers.  I always like it when Spider-Man does that cool “swing in and kick with both feet” maneuver and Superman is never cooler for me than…

Recently, mainstream news outlets caught wind of the super-makeout session between Superman and Wonder Woman, and wondered what happened to his marriage to Teri Hatcher.  Sadly, the Clark/Lois nuptuals, as well as those of Spider-Man and The Flash, have been retconned away because the current editorial teams at Marvel and DC seem to feel that they “aged the characters too much.”  I have to say that I find this thought process suspect, given that the age of the comics audience has been steadily increasing since the 1980s, and both Superman and Spider-Man were married for twenty-odd years of stories.  More…

Among the things I am troubled by in pop culture (in a vague, extraordinarily boring sort of way) are questions of what bits filter through into the general public’s consciousness.  Take the original Star Trek, for example.  It’s become a cliche to point out that Captain Kirk never says “Beam me up, Scotty” or to point out that the transporter broke every other episode, but there are deeper questions to delve into.  For example, why is the Mirror Universe Spock’s beard a symbol of evil when he was the only crew member in that universe who WASN’T a complete bastard? …

The world of movies is chock-full of unanswered, maddening questions.  Questions like, what in the holy hell in Marsellus Wallace’s briefcase?  What’s is the Man With No Name’s name?  Why didn’t Indiana Jones drown on the outside of that submarine?  Why do people watch Michael Bay movies?  Some of these queries fall under the header of plot-holes (like the seemingly unmatchable time-lines of Luke and Han in ‘Empire Strikes Back’), while others are intentionally tantalizing threads (like the origin of the scars on Heath Ledger’s face as the Joker), but some are completely inexplicable (like how Big Red got away…

Occasionally in my life, I’ve had a very bad first impression of certain bits of pop culture that was as knee-jerk as it is powerful.  Notably, I was turned off by the first issue of Neil Gaiman’s ‘Sandman,’ and didn’t return to the series for several years.  (In my defense, #1 is atypical of the series and certain not the best single issue.)  I also had an immediate dislike of The Venture Brothers, based on the episode where they killed Race Bannon, one of my childhood heroes.  I have since changed my views vehemently, and now believe that the series…

The sad passing of actor Michael Clarke Duncan over the weekend triggered all sorts of weird thought processes in my brain-wiring, as these sort of losses almost always do.  Questions like “How good was The Green Mile?” and “Would more Kilowog have made Green Lantern any better?” rumble through my brain (the answers, of course, being “SO good!” and “It sure as hell couldn’t have made it much worse.”)  But one of the most interesting bits in my head was noting that M.C.D. played the role of Wilson Fisk in the gawdawful ’03 Daredevil movie, a role first realized in…

While I am generally familiar with most television of the last 50 years, I have always bowed to those with greater knowledge than I.  One such man is Otter Disaster, the mind behind Major Spoilers Adventures, whose knowledge of M*A*S*H leaves my own in the dust  While watching the M*A*S*H 30th Anniversary special on TV Land recently, I was struck by the realization that, in its history, the show essentially changed from a gag-driven sitcom to a dramatic examination of war and the human condition.  Also, that Charles Emerson Winchester III is the most pompous human being ever to be…

Last night, a friend asked me about the upcoming Judge Dredd movie, wondering why they’d ever remake such a terrible film.  I explained to her about the much-older (and, frankly, much BETTER) British comic strip upon which it was based, and how Dredd himself is considerably cooler than Stallone’s treatment.  The discussion turned to how Dredd NEVER removed his helmet, and how it’s very nearly the first thing Stallone did as the Judge, and suddenly I realized that nearly EVERY superhero movie in the past few years has had an unmasking scene.  Obadiah Stane ripped off Iron Man’s faceplate, Toby…
