The process of narrowing down the long list of entrants of the Major Spoilers Costume Contest has been interesting to say the least. Some have been aggressively arguing on who everyone should vote for, while others want everyone to walk away a winner. Yesterday’s work at the comic store included several books that fell into a theme: Steel, The Indestructible Man #1, The Six Million Dollar Man #1, Superman Vol. 2 #1 and the first issue of Marvel’s Star Wars comic. With the upcoming remake of Robocop, and the return of Aaron Stack in this week’s issue of Red She-Hulk, I am finding myself awash in machine-men, which led me to ponder today’s ponderance… The MS-QOTD (pronounced, as always, “misquoted”) sics the Venus Probe on Bigfoot, asking: Who is your favorite cyborg in pop-culture history?

Every year, when we run the Major Spoilers Costume Contest, I get a little nervous that there won’t be anyone that enters. Once again the cosplay community has come to life and entered, and entered and entered, each trying to get their hands on the coveted prizes we’re giving away this year. Before the finalists are announced, and the voting starts, it’s time to take a look at all the great entrants for 2012.

I have long been fascinated by people’s expectations of what is the “REAL” version of any given property. I have had real conversations with people who hated Christopher Reeve as Superman because he wasn’t George Reeves, with those who disliked all John Byrne issues of X-Men because he’ll never be Dave Cockrum, and we shouldn’t even consider all the questions about which incarnation of The Doctor is best. I have often heard the opinion that your favorite Doctor is usually the one to which you are first exposed, but I think there’s a caveat: You have to be paying attention. …
I always find it interesting when my child asks me an incisive question, but it’s even more fun when she thinks to ask a question that I never did. During a recent viewing of ‘Chōjin Sentai Jetman’, she seemed to be considering something for several minutes, tilting her head and squishing up her eyebrows in the way she does before she ruins something for Daddy has a pop-culture epiphany. Her question, however, was a good one: “How come if they’re just a bunch of kids, all the Power Rangers know how to fight so good?” It got me thinking about…

During a recent downtime discussion at work, a co-worker asked me how many languages I actually speak. Though the answer is two (English and Gibberish), she believed that it was more because of my successful answers during daily viewings of quiz shows, my ability to pronounce certain specialized terms that pop up in our daily work, and her mistaken belief that the word ‘Frammistat’ was actually German. In reality, I have sufficient command of Spanish to get arrested, a tiny bit of semi-conversational Japanese, a very rudimentary chunk of Latin (thanks to a school-teacher grandmother) and know exactly one sentence…
