Conan movie gets release date

If you have been jumping up and down awaiting the news on when the new Conan movie will arrive in theaters, today is your day.  Lionsgate has announced the Jason Momoa film will hit U.S. theaters on August 19, 2011, and feature a PG-13 rating.  I guess that means no nekkid women lamenting over Conan’s crushing defeat of his enemies.

Sadly, the film will be done up as a 3-D release… When will they learn?

Marvel Studios and Lionsgate Home Entertainment have released the trailer for their next animated movie – Thor: Tales of Asgard.  Those who bought the Planet Hulk direct to DVD movie yesterday already saw it, but for those of us who are waiting for the weekend an that big big paycheck (hey, I can dream), this should tide you over.

Conan found, and it isn’t Arnold

Deadline Hollywood is often dead on when posting rumors, so we’re going to believe the crew over there this time with their announcement that 30-year-old actor Jason Momoa has been cast as Conan in the Lionsgate Millenium Films latest adaptation of the Robert E. Howard’s classic character.

Sources said that director Marcus Nispel was sold on Momoa, and won over the filmmakers by shooting a few trial scenes that allowed Momoa to wield a sword and behave very Schwarzenegger-like. This keeps the film on course for a March 15 production start in Bulgaria

Sounds good to me.  Let’s get this project in front of the lens, and then get it in theaters.

Natalie Portman will take on the undead

An odd surprise hit earlier this year was Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, which retells the Jane Austen story with the undead thrown in for good measure.  Lionsgate films will finance and distribute the film, but it’s Natalie Portman who is producing and starring.

Portman will play feisty heroine Elizabeth Bennet, who is distracted from her quest to eradicate the zombie menace by the arrival of the arrogant Mr. Darcy.

As long as the movie isn’t as dog slow as the last Pride and Prejudice I was forced to watch a few years ago, I think it might actually work.
