DIGITAL COMICS: DC RELAUNCH: Print edition to include download code

Hi! I’m Stephen, and I have an iPad. For the last year and a half (or more), I’ve been discussing ways mainstream publishers can make digital comics work and make everyone happy. DC made a huge splash in the digital comics market when it announced this week that all of its superhero titles would go digital day and date release. While great news, the last day or so had me pondering what new titles I would get only in print, and which would be digital only editions.
One of my suggestions in the past has been to bundle a digital code with every print copy, much like the movie industry is doing with DVD releases. I can go to the store and purchase a Blu-ray copy of Green Lantern: Emerald Knights, that not only includes the Blu-Ray HD version of the film, but also a standard definition DVD and an electronic code to download/transfer the movie to my iTunes account for use on my iPad, iPod, iPhone, or AppleTV (and yes, I do have all of them).
My worries over the question of Print or Digital have been answered by DC in the form of Combo Packs.
DIGITAL COMICS: DC goes day and date with entire line
![]()
Good news for digital comics fans, DC has announced it is taking its entire line of comics to the digital day and date model, that I have long encouraged publishers to do. This was announced by DC earlier today and will begin August 31, 2011 with Justice League #1. DC stunned many when it offered digital day and date release of Generation Lost, and now beats Marvel with this announcement.
While this certainly isn’t news brick and mortar stores want to hear right now, keep in mind the relaunching and renumbering is geared primarily to bring in new readers, and combining that with the digital releases should be something that is very attractive to those with the fancy-pants iPad. It’s unfortunate that DC is doing this at the end of August, as the company will have missed a perfect opportunity to bring readers in during the release of Green Lantern. August is also a very busy month for those with more disposable income as they are heading back to school, and are generally caught up in the shenanigans of a new school year. Here’s hoping that doesn’t hurt adoption rates by the one group who should be most keen on digital comics.

Dark Horse Comics is putting the final touches on their iPad App, and we should get more information as 4/20 approaches. While Dark Horse didn’t go into detail as to why the app was delayed before, Apple’s enforcement of in-app sales probably had something to do with it.
Take the jump for the full announcement from the company, and details on how to win an iPad 2.

Wizard World, Inc. launches iPad App

As part of the public offering of Wizard World, the company announced the digital magazine edition of Wizard World.
Mr. Shamus states, “I believe the Company’s new digital magazine provides the best medium to give the consumers and producers of pop culture what they seek in a format they are comfortable with. Wizard World digi-zine focuses heavily on future trends and product introductions and launches, as well as spotlights those that help determine the next hottest trend. With access to fans that number in the millions worldwide and through the production of Comic Cons across North America, I believe that the Company is in a unique position to launch Wizard World digi-zine to a massive audience. Further, those who are interested in graphic novels, genre films, video games, comic books and other pop culture will likely find that Wizard World digi-zine suits their interests.”
I took a moment to download the app for the iPad (I have one in case you didn’t know)… or I should say I tried to download the app. After doing all the iPad App download majiks – really if you don’t own an iPad, then you wouldn’t understand, the install stalled for longer than I cared to find out. Already the digital version of Wizard World has just as much interest as the print edition did.
