Zach on Film is missing this week

During our recording of Zach on Film: Singin’ in the Rain, our computer system crashed.  When it was relaunched, the recording was still there, and everything looked fine.  Even after the evening’s recordings, the files were still present and accounted for, everything was saved, and we went about our Major Spoilers business.

Today, however, the story is a bit different. Now the system can’t find the audio files, and we’ve looked everywhere. It can find the audio files for the show we recorded immediately AFTER Zach on Film, but not the files for this episode.  This has only happened one or two other times in the history of our podcasts, and it bums us out each and every time. We won’t rerecord this discussion because most of the time the dynamic is lost.

So, no Zach on Film this week. It was an interesting discussion regarding a ’50s take on a ’20s story, and the fact that the entire song list in the movie had previously been released as singles, and the studio was simply looking for a way to tie it all together.  Zach received passing marks from everyone, and in the next installment we will look at Moulin Rouge that serves as a nice bookend to the musical genre.

On the Next Major Spoilers Podcast: Calvin and Hobbes

This week, on the Major Spoilers Podcast, we continue or examination of newspaper strips with a look at Calvin and Hobbes.

Calvin and Hobbes is unquestionably one of the most popular comic strips of all time. The imaginative world of a boy and his real-only-to-him tiger was first syndicated in 1985 and appeared in more than 2,400 newspapers when Bill Watterson retired on January 1, 1996. The entire body of Calvin and Hobbes cartoons published in a truly noteworthy tribute to this singular cartoon in The Complete Calvin and Hobbes. Composed of three hardcover, four-color volumes in a sturdy slipcase, this edition includes all Calvin and Hobbes cartoons that ever appeared in syndication. This is the treasure that all Calvin and Hobbes fans seek.

On the Next Major Spoilers Podcast: The Complete Peanuts 1950-1952

This week, Major Spoilers takes a look at Charles Schulz’s Peanuts.

This first volume, covering the first two and a quarter years of the strip, will be of particular fascination to Peanuts aficionados worldwide: Although there have been literally hundreds of Peanuts books published, many of the strips from the series’ first two or three years have never been collected before — in large part because they showed a young Schulz working out the kinks in his new strip and include some characterizations and designs that are quite different from the cast we’re all familiar with. (Among other things, three major cast members — Schroeder, Lucy, and Linus — initially show up as infants and only “grow” into their final “mature” selves as the months go by. Even Snoopy debuts as a puppy!) Thus The Complete Peanuts offers a unique chance to see a master of the art form refine his skills and solidify his universe, day by day, week by week, month by month.

On the Next Major Spoilers Podcast: The Flash: Born to Run (1992)

It comes as no surprise that Young Zach has not read too many comics featuring The Flash. This week, the Major Spoilers Podcast fixes that by not only looking back at the origin of Wally West, but also the introduction of a new Flash writer, one Mr. Mark Waid.

When Wally West, the adolescent nephew of the Flash’s fiancée, accidentally gained powers of super speed, he became the Scarlet Speedster’s sidekick. Growing up as his hero’s protégé, Kid Flash had a childhood of amazing action and adventure. But on the day that the Flash died, Wally’s carefree adolescence abruptly ended and his life as an adult began. THE FLASH: BORN TO RUN looks back at Wally’s earliest days as the Kid Flash and explores the gamut of his emotions and experiences from his first day as a child hero to his succession of Barry Allen as the new Flash. A journey full of humor and drama, this story shows just how much Wally West loves being the fastest man alive.

Major Spoilers Death of the Week: Death, death, and oh yes, DEATH!

We’ve been thinking a lot about death lately – the ending of something that could be the beginning of something else; a time to remember the good times, and the hope that the person has moved on to something better. But comics don’t treat death as a permanent thing. For years readers have seen death become the revolving door in comics; a gimmick, a ploy to part the reader with the money, a sensational event that can be sensationalized across the pages of the few surviving mega newspapers across the country. In short death seems to have lost all meaning for the comic book reader.
