Podcasting 101 Part 2: All that audio stuff

I was really surprised at the feedback following my first podcasting article, and the number or requests for additional information.  You asked for it, and now you’re getting it.

Podcasting is now old school. It’s been around long enough that the bleeding edge, and early adopters have established methods and procedures that now make it easy for others to jump on the bandwagon. You can be a podcaster too, and in this installment I’ll cover some of the gear you’ll need to think about getting as you jump through the hoops on your way to building your own podcasting empire.

Comic Casting Couch: Doc Savage

Doc Savage is making a comeback, and over the next couple of years we’re going to see him not only in comic books, but in a movie that has been in the works for a while. Before official casting is announced, we thought we’d cast our net far and wide and pick our own actors to fill the major roles.

Limited test, or brilliant master plan? Invincible Iron Man Annual #1 and digital distribution

Last week, the comic-book-o-sphere was abuzz with speculation that the Invincible Iron Man Annual #1 would cost more in its digital format when it goes Day and Date release. Yesterday, Marvel CCO Joe Quesada confirmed that those who decide to buy the annual via the Marvel iPad App would indeed pay an extra buck.

“The Iron Man comic is over 60 pages, and in print it’s priced at $4.99, but on average for that kind of page count, we would have priced it at $5.99 or broken it up into three $2.99 issues. Our comics on the Marvel App are priced at $1.99 and the way the annual is written it breaks up nicely into three chapters perfectly, so that’s how we’ll break It up in the app. So, when you do the math on this one, the direct market comic shop has the advantage in price on this one, and we’ve already received word from retailers that they feel this is the best way to set this test up.” – Comic Book Resources

A test, or a brilliant master plan for regular method of operation?

In the past, “tests” for price increases have resulted in company wide changes, and I expect that increased digital day and date release costs to become the norm for Marvel. While I understand Quesada’s reasoning for increasing the cover price so as not to anger or upset the local comic shop owners, if you really think about it, upping the price for this annual (and presumably all future day and date releases) is a huge profit margin maker for Marvel.

iPad by the Numbers

iPad by the Numbers

The Apple iPad has been out for several weeks, and most publishers are jumping on the bandwagon by offering up more and more digital versions of their comics. While there are no day of releases showing up on the various services yet, there is still a plethora of great reading to be had, and over time, the savings should add up for those who prefer to wait for the trade.

FEATURE: iPad is the new comic book reader.

For years, I’ve been yearning for an electronic device that would allow me to read a large collection of comics no matter where I am in the world. I’ve previously written about my excitement over the iPad, and now that the device is here, how well does it work for comic books, and what comic book applications are the best?

30 Days and Counting – Will the iPad change the comic model?

We’re roughly thirty days away from the launch of Apple’s much-talked-about iPad.  While the device looks like a flattened iPod, its potential to revolutionize the way we consume media is staggering.  One of the more interesting aspects of the iPad is the ability to read comic books at nearly the same size as the printed version.  While other e-books only have black-and-white displays, the iPad’s color screen could radically change the way we read and access comics.

I’ve talked before about digital comics and how an effective electronic color reader could change the way we access and enjoy comic books.  But is the iPad that device?

Confessions of a Cosplay Girl: How I became a comic geek

“How did someone like you get into comics?”

I am often asked this question whenever people discover that I am a comic geek. I find it an odd question and I’m not entirely sure what they mean by “someone like you”. I assume they are referring to the fact that I am a woman but many times the conversation shifts and focuses on my looks. Whatever the case, it’s funny when people say how impressed they are that I know who Geoff Johns is or that I can name a particular Batman: The Animated Series episode by title. I’m not just into “girl” comics; I remember reading the Justice League when Ted Kord and Booster Gold provided the comic relief and when the X-Men took in Joseph, who was actually Magneto’s clone. This brings me back to the question, “How did someone like you get into comics?”

Confessions of a Cosplay Girl: Baltimore Comic Con

The 10th annual Baltimore Comic-Con took place October 10th and 11th at the Baltimore Convention Center in Maryland.  This was my first year attending the show and also marked the first time I would be wearing my Supergirl outfit to a convention (my only other public appearance was at a grand opening of a comic store). I was also pretty excited about Major Spoilers “Spot the cosplayer” contest and wondered if anyone would recognize my boyfriend and I from the site.

The Collection Obsession: Packaging, The Great Space Waster

I’ve got to be the collectible market’s dream come true.  I seem to have an obsessive compulsive disorder that makes me a completest, as once I start collecting something, I’m driven to continue purchasing those items until the collection is complete.  As someone who went through the 1990s rise and fall of the speculation market, it’s also been ingrained into my head that limited edition items should be kept mint on the card or mint in the box if one wants to have any hope of selling the items for a profit in the future.  Having been on a major collecting kick for the last 10 years, a couple of things have become completely clear 1) I’m a pack-rat, and 2) the biggest foe to any collector has to be the packaging.
