October was an interesting month for comics as the industry saw an increase in revenue of 9% over last year at this time. At first it may appear to be due to larger sales, but when one examines the Top 50 books, 18 titles had a price point of $3.99, or roughly 36% of the books shipping for the month. Diamond Comic Distributors sent Major Spoilers a rundown of the top 50 manga titles for August 2008. Probably most interesting is finding the World of Warcraft title taking the number one spot, as I really expected a vampire, or space, or space vampire, or Naruto title to take the top spot. Also a surprise, was to find another Blizzard Entertainment property, Starcraft, taking the number three spot on the list.
August marks the first full month charting the Watchmen Trailer Effect, as the Alan Moore, Dave Gibbons trade hit number one in the Top 100 Trade Paperbacks and Graphic Novels as reported by Diamond Comic Distributors. Marvel took the month with the more titles in the Top 10 than the other companies with eight titles in the top spot.
