The Marvel Age comes to the iPad

Marvel has announced that Enter the Heroic Age and Young Allies #1 have both arrived on the Marvel Comics App available for the iPad, iPhone, and iPod Touch.

“Both of these issues present readers with a look at some of our most acclaimed series in this bold new era for Marvel,” said David Gabriel, Marvel Senior Vice-President of Sales & Circulation. “Working with our retailer advisory committee, we believe introducing single issues of our acclaimed series to our Marvel Comics app users will encourage them to visit their local comic shops for the next chapters of these series. Whether you’re a long time fan or new to comics, there’s something here for everyone in the Heroic Age.”

Additionally, Nomad: Girl Without a World #1-4, Gravity #1-4, and Firestar #1 are also available today on through the App.

REVIEW: Invincible Iron Man Annual #1

Hi, I’m Stephen, and I have an iPad.  Owning such a wondrous device affords me the pleasure of having a veritable library of new and old comics at my finger tips at a moments notice.  This week also marked the release of Marvel’s day and date issue of Invincible Iron Man Annual #1 in both electronic and physical form.  Was the experiment worth it?

BOOM! Studios spills digital comics all over the place

Earlier this week, BOOM! Studios announced its all new iPad application for purchasing and viewing the company’s digital comics.  While the title selection is relatively small right now, the interest in the application was enough to drive the app to the number seven position just behind Marvel in the Free Book App category of the iTunes App store.

If BOOM! has any hope of surpassing the competition, the company is going to need to do two things; increase the number of titles and issues available, and really consider day and date release.  The first hurdle is already being worked on as the company told me that they plan on having their entire backlist of titles available to consumers by the end of the 2010 summer season.

“BOOM! Studios is aggressively committed to getting our comics and graphic novels into the hands of fans everywhere,” said BOOM! Studios Marketing Director Chip Mosher. “By offering our comics digitally we’ve made it easier than ever for new and old fans alike to access our growing library of acclaimed comics. Stay tuned! This is just the start of our digital roll out with much more to come!”

The second issue of Day and Date is going to be more of a challenge, as it appears most publishers are taking the wait and see approach to Day and Date, and it looks like it will hinge on Marvel’s Invincible Iron Man stunt it will be pulling in a few weeks.

For those wondering if the company announcement will include Disney titles, we’ve been told it does not, as Disney has its own comic book app.

BOOM! One more company goes to the iPad

If you had your iPad open over the weekend and were checking out the just released apps, chances are you saw and downloaded the BOOM! Studios App for the device.  The BOOM! Studios Comics app for both the iPad and iPhone (and iPod Touch) is created by the people behind the ComiXology and Marvel Apps.  It’s very well done, and the company is celebrating the release of the FREE app with several launch titles, including 28 Days Later, Die Hard and Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?

“While comic-based movies are thriving on the big screen, the reality is most fans have never been exposed to comics books as a medium unto themselves,” said David Steinberger, CEO of comiXology. “Digital comics give us the opportunity to reach a broader audience and inspire them to connect with the comics community through titles they’re already passionate about.”

Riot Shell goes completely digital

If you have the Comic Zeal App for your iPhone, iPad, or iPod Touch, then you can snag a free copy of Riot Shell from Nicita Designs. The company is releasing the issue in .CBR format, which is an interesting choice, as opposed to some heavily DRMed edition that so many companies are fond of these days.

Limited test, or brilliant master plan? Invincible Iron Man Annual #1 and digital distribution

Last week, the comic-book-o-sphere was abuzz with speculation that the Invincible Iron Man Annual #1 would cost more in its digital format when it goes Day and Date release. Yesterday, Marvel CCO Joe Quesada confirmed that those who decide to buy the annual via the Marvel iPad App would indeed pay an extra buck.

“The Iron Man comic is over 60 pages, and in print it’s priced at $4.99, but on average for that kind of page count, we would have priced it at $5.99 or broken it up into three $2.99 issues. Our comics on the Marvel App are priced at $1.99 and the way the annual is written it breaks up nicely into three chapters perfectly, so that’s how we’ll break It up in the app. So, when you do the math on this one, the direct market comic shop has the advantage in price on this one, and we’ve already received word from retailers that they feel this is the best way to set this test up.” – Comic Book Resources

A test, or a brilliant master plan for regular method of operation?

In the past, “tests” for price increases have resulted in company wide changes, and I expect that increased digital day and date release costs to become the norm for Marvel. While I understand Quesada’s reasoning for increasing the cover price so as not to anger or upset the local comic shop owners, if you really think about it, upping the price for this annual (and presumably all future day and date releases) is a huge profit margin maker for Marvel.

ME WANT: Joker iPad Decal

If you’ve purchased an iPad (or two), then you’ve probably reached the point where the newness has worn off, and now you’re looking for a way to differentiate your wonder device from the millions of other iPads out there.  Enter BackGlass with the Joker iPad decal that depicts the Clown Prince of Crime holding the Apple logo in his hands.

Yes, I’m positive this violates copyright laws, but it sure as heck beats the hell out of Calvin peeing on a [insert car company logo here] sticker.  Sadly, this bit of ephemera is sold out (frown face)
