DIGITAL COMICS: Magician Master arrives in digital format before print

Marvel has announced that Magician: Master arrived on the Marvel Comics app ahead of the print edition.

“Magician: Master is the first full-length series from Marvel to be published on the Marvel Comics app before arriving in stores,” explained David Gabriel, Senior Vice-President of Sales. “Given both Raymond E. Feist’s worldwide popularity and success of Magician: Apprentice and Riftwar, Magician: Master seemed a natural choice for our first app-exclusive series.”

The idea of having a digital exclusive isn’t new, but when a company is willing to take a work created by two award winning creators (Bryan J. Glass, Tim Seeley, and Hugo Petrus), it is something people should make note of… and I’m sure brick and mortar stores are taking notice of this move.

DIGITAL COMICS: Archie Comics go Day and Date in April

Another big digital comics item for fans of the format, Archie Comics has announced it will be going digital day and date with six of its monthly titles beginning in April 2011; Archie, Archie & Friends, Betty, Veronica, Betty and Veronica, and Jughead.

“We have a very exciting little business here,” said Jon Goldwater, the co-chief executive of Archie Comics. “We have to keep figuring out ways of pushing it forward.”

For years Archie Comics have been prominantely displayed at the checkout counter at supermarkets across the country, and I’m still surprised at the number of Major Spoilerites who look forward to the weekly Archie Comics Sneak Peek. With tough times ahead for comic publishers, getting out and in the face of the next generation of comic readers who are using iPad and the like to get their information. And as Mr. Goldwater stated in the New York Times article, “the more I saw the sales, I realized these formats aren’t competitive, they are supportive.”

Good on ya Archie!
