With the Rebirth event, I gave every comic DC was making as part of it a chance. Some I was impressed with, some I wasn’t. One of the ones that really surprised me was New Super-Man. It has taken a very different approach to a “super” character, and given the difficulties of writing the Man of Steel and his family these days, I liked it a lot!

Recently Stephen Schleicher was interested in our thoughts on this subject: “Is the drop in (November) sales due to the holidays, or something else? You have the data, so now it is up to you to draw your own conclusions and share the information in the comment section below.” I’d like to weigh in on this subject since I have some thoughts about what’s happening.

This week a new version of DC’s Direct Currents free quarterly periodical arrived in comics shops, taking its place alongside Marvel’s Free Previews to provide information about upcoming titles from that company. In this era of Internet instantaneous communication, including Facebook and Twitter, why produce a slick, four-color, glossy publication about your products? There are good and bad sides to this, so let me explore some of them.

I’ve long been a Teen Titans fan, even back to the Mister Twister “origin” story. When younger heroes get together, it’s always fun for me. Now we have two, count ’em, two “Titans” books, one with that original team, and this one with something resembling the Marv Wolfman/George Perez era group. It’s off to a good start, I think!

From Caleb Thusat, the writer of the Indie comic Alter-Life, comes this book, described as “a gorgeous greyscale comic with some gore, some laughs, and a biker-mortician. It’s an action-packed, fresh take on the zombie genre.” Honestly, I thought I’d read all there was to do with zombies, especially in comics. Turns out I was wrong, dead wrong!

Often I like to talk about local comics shops and why I frequent them. One of the biggest reasons I go is that they often offer subscription services. When I sign up for them, I usually find what I’m looking for already pulled and waiting for me when I get there. Like most everything in life, however, there are good and bad sides to this common practice.

I’ve discovered another great comics company! This week in Episode 257, I delve into Fierce Comics by talking about the first Midwalker: Light Breed trade paperback with writer Ben Filipiak, artist Mike Shoykhet, and colorist Scott Reed as we explore this excellent title. It’s the season to say what we’re all thankful for, so I thought this week I’d accentuate the positive and focus on those things in the comics industry I’m grateful are happening.
