With the Rebirth event, I gave every comic DC was making as part of it a chance. Some I was impressed with, some I wasn’t. One of the ones that really surprised me was New Super-Man. It has taken a very different approach to a “super” character, and given the difficulties of writing the Man of Steel and his family these days, I liked it a lot!

Recently Stephen Schleicher was interested in our thoughts on this subject: “Is the drop in (November) sales due to the holidays, or something else? You have the data, so now it is up to you to draw your own conclusions and share the information in the comment section below.” I’d like to weigh in on this subject since I have some thoughts about what’s happening.
This week, you’ll hear my special interview with Joe Martino, an artist/writer who I believe continues to be an important groundbreaker in Indie comics, and who recently concluded his successful Kickstarter campaign celebrating the 20th anniversary of Shadowflame, his first character and series. We also delve into other creations of his, including The Mighty Titan, Cyberines, and Ripperman, and Joe talks about Red Anvil Comics and the great products he, Dave Ryan and others are producing there. He also gives us a peek ahead so we can be on the lookout for his upcoming projects, so be sure to listen…
This week a new version of DC’s Direct Currents free quarterly periodical arrived in comics shops, taking its place alongside Marvel’s Free Previews to provide information about upcoming titles from that company. In this era of Internet instantaneous communication, including Facebook and Twitter, why produce a slick, four-color, glossy publication about your products? There are good and bad sides to this, so let me explore some of them.
This week, Bob Salley from Salvagers is back, and he updates us on many of his projects.
We can’t help ourselves. Many of us are fascinated by even the possibility of the supernatural being real. I know it gains my attention at the slightest provocation. Angels are probably the most intriguing of the supernatural to me. They’re often messengers or beings sent out to do the bidding of a higher power. They don’t always come down on the side of good, it seems, so just being one doesn’t mean you’ll necessarily be someone considered trustworthy. What if someone said you might be one or, at the very least, related to one? That’s what No Angel deals with,…
I’ve long been a Teen Titans fan, even back to the Mister Twister “origin” story. When younger heroes get together, it’s always fun for me. Now we have two, count ’em, two “Titans” books, one with that original team, and this one with something resembling the Marv Wolfman/George Perez era group. It’s off to a good start, I think!
From Caleb Thusat, the writer of the Indie comic Alter-Life, comes this book, described as “a gorgeous greyscale comic with some gore, some laughs, and a biker-mortician. It’s an action-packed, fresh take on the zombie genre.” Honestly, I thought I’d read all there was to do with zombies, especially in comics. Turns out I was wrong, dead wrong!
Often I like to talk about local comics shops and why I frequent them. One of the biggest reasons I go is that they often offer subscription services. When I sign up for them, I usually find what I’m looking for already pulled and waiting for me when I get there. Like most everything in life, however, there are good and bad sides to this common practice.
I’ve discovered another great comics company! This week in Episode 257, I delve into Fierce Comics by talking about the first Midwalker: Light Breed trade paperback with writer Ben Filipiak, artist Mike Shoykhet, and colorist Scott Reed as we explore this excellent title. We discuss the various characters and how they came to the printed page, the roles each creator played in bringing the comic together, and what is in store for this book and others from Fierce in the coming months. Don’t miss it! http://dts.podtrac.com/redirect.mp3/traffic.libsyn.com/majorspoilers/WComics257.mp3 Direct Download Subscribe via iTunes Subscribe to the Major Spoilers Podcast Network Master Feed! It’s the season to say what we’re all thankful for, so I thought this week I’d accentuate the positive and focus on those things in the comics industry I’m grateful are happening.
It’s a double-header episode again this week, as #256 features my latest interview with Braiden Cox, who has a Kickstarter project going on right now for Pet Squadron: Defenders of Humanity at this link! I highly recommend this creative Indie comic, and it truly deserves your support before it concludes on Thursday, December 1, at 9:02 p.m. ET. It’s a great title that combines our love for our pets with action and adventure, so be sure to listen to what Braiden has to say! Then everything concludes with a classic interview I conducted a few years back with Peter Hogan,…
It’s a great episode this week, as #255 features my interview with Russell Lissau.
