I’ve always viewed Young Adult (YA) novels and graphic novels skeptically. They often are preachy, with not much substance to them. Then DC started up their DC Ink group. I delved into several of them, including Mera and Super Sons, and I enjoyed them. I saw that one of them was going to focus on Batman, my favorite character, so I was all in. And it was the best of the bunch, in my opinion!

One of the greatest things about comics is their ability to transport us to places we’ve never been before. I particularly enjoy it when we get to learn about cultures and situations I haven’t seen previously, and that’s where Black Sands Entertainment comes in. Their series Black Sands: The Seven Kingdoms has been a real treasure to me because I’ve been taken somewhere I’ve never had the pleasure of experiencing before, and I’ve met new characters who provide me with a new perspective. Not everyone who gets extra-normal powers uses them for good, it seems!

This past Saturday, September 21, was the yearly celebration of DC’s best-known character, Batman. It was also part of the 80th anniversary event for the Dark Knight, and it received a lot of attention. I was interested in seeing how it would go, especially since Batman has been my favorite hero since I discovered his last name was my first name. Oh, and it was possible, no matter how unlikely, that he was someone I could emulate if I tried hard enough!
