About Stephen Schleicher

Stephen Schleicher began his career writing for the Digital Media Online community of sites, including Digital Producer and Creative Mac covering all aspects of the digital content creation industry. He then moved on to consumer technology, and began the Coolness Roundup podcast. A writing fool, Stephen has freelanced for Sci-Fi Channel's Technology Blog, and Gizmodo. Still longing for the good ol' days, Stephen launched Major Spoilers in July 2006, because he is a glutton for punishment.

Sigmund and the Sea Monsters: THE MOVIE!

sigmund_sea.jpg

Say What!?  Universal Pictures just cut a deal to bring that most awesome of ’70′s shows Sigmund and the Sea Monsters to the big screen.  Dana Gould of The Simpsons fame will be writing and producing.

“Sigmund” originally ran on NBC from 1973-75, and the show was a staple in reruns on local TV stations for the rest of the decade. After the sea monster is booted from his home by his nasty brothers for being too nice, Sigmund is befriended by two friends who stash him in their clubhouse.

As a wee lad, I remember going down to the basement, turning on the B&W (that’s black and white for you young’uns) and being mesmerized, and a bit frightened by the freaky monsters on the screen.  I haven’t seen anything about the Land of the Lost film with Will Farrell, but I’m hoping it is done seriously.  If Universal takes Sigmund seriously, it could be E.T., but with sea monsters instead of aliens.

I really thought we’d see a H.R. Pufnstuff movie before Sigmund and the Sea Monsters…oh, wait, Sony is developing that right now.

Dark Knight Returns…to theaters

dark_knight_7.jpg

Warner Bros. has announced it will rerelease The Dark Knight to IMAX theaters in January, right smack dab in the middle of Academy Awards voting season.

Warners domestic distribution president Dan Fellman acknowledged ongoing talks with Imax executives about the prospect of restoring the Christian Bale starrer to some number of giant-screen venues in January. It’s uncertain if “Dark Knight” also will reappear in conventional venues at that point.

There’s no question the company is sending the flick back to theaters to garner more attention for votes, but don’t think it is an attempt to make a run at Titanic’s number one spot in the all time box office money makers, as the DVD release of The Dark Knight arrives in December.

About that Hoffman and Penguin Rumor

hoffman.jpgSeriously, when Christopher Nolan hasn’t even signed to direct the third film, and while no announcements have been made about Warner even greenlighting another Batman movie, did you really think the reports about Philip Seymour Hoffman playing the Penguin were true?

Really?

Really?

This is one of those silly rumors that have been around for a many years, and it took a quick interview with Hoffman to put it to rest.

“No one has talked to me about it ever — never,” replied Hoffman. “It happened, like, five years ago, too. It was a rumor back then and it’s still a rumor. [laughs] It’s just in the press. It’s funny.”

We reported on this rumor up a couple of years ago, and learned our lesson from it.  There’s a reason why we haven’t been running all those wild rumors lately- because that is exactly what they are – wild rumors, that serve no purpose but to further push nonsense.  Sure, it’s fun to speculate, or to get a really good laugh, but too many surfing the webs believe everything they read.  I would have thought people would have learned their lesson after all those insane Justice League movie rumors IESB was link baiting to all those months ago.  And for those who still think Johnny Depp will play the Riddler and Cher is set for Catwoman, I have a Will Smith Captain America movie script I’d like to sell you.

About that All-Star Batman and Robin Recall

asbar.jpg

As many of you saw this week, DC issued a recall of the Frank Miller/Jim Lee All-Star Batman and Robin issue, citing printing errors.  Any issues that may have “accidentally” reached the local comic shops were supposed to be destroyed.  The printing error in question had to do with a couple four letter words and the dark censor bar that just wasn’t dark enough to block out those words.

When you send out an announcement like that, two things are bound to happen; A) LCSes that want to make a fast buck are going to sell the issue for 10 times the cover price, and B) the offending errors are going to show up on the Interweb’s Net.

Yes, we were aware of what the words were earlier this week, but were waiting for the actual pages to surface.  You can see one of those panels after the jump.  Oh, and if you are under 18, don’t click that More link, because after all, we wouldn’t want you exposed to anything that might be offensive – although I’m pretty sure your walk/ride to school in the morning is filled with worse language than what is presented in this issue.

Fishtown Arrives with Hardcover

Fishtown_Cover_Mock.jpg

Kevin Colden, creator of the webcomic Fishtown, dropped Major Spoilers an e-mail to let everyone know IDW Publishing will release a hardcover collection of the series in November.

Originally serialized as a weekly webcomic, IDW is proud to collect the entire story into deluxe hardcover form.  Inspired by real events, Colden’s story explores what leads a group of teens to commit a heinous crime.  FISHTOWN is an absorbing read that compels the reader to explore a world they hope to never experience.

With the switch from webcomic to print, Colden assured us that all the artwork has been cleaned up for this volume, “Trust me – it will be a whole different reading experience.”

November Sees Kingdom Come

kcomesuperman.jpg

If you are interested in the Magog/Kingdom Come story taking place in the pages of Justice Society of America, hold on to your hat as the story isn’t ending anytime soon.  This November DC will release three spin-off specials that hopefully wrap up the events of Earth-22.  In either case, I don’t think Matthew will be too pleased.
