It’s a much-repeated truism in my social circles that comic books and soap operas have a lot in common.  There’s a focus on cliffhangers to enhance the episodic nature of the story, storylines where the ends justify even the most ridiculous means, and of course, tons of evil twins.  In many ways, the medium of soap opera and the medium of comic book are incredibly similar, right down to the narrowing of their audience and near-extinction as their tropes and structure have been adopted by other genres.  Heck, the CW has made an entire network out of combining both into one, leading to today’s melodramatic query…

The MS-QOTD (pronounced, as always, “misquoted”) always likes to remind people of the days when ‘The Guilding Light and Marvel Comics had an official crossover event, asking: Do you enjoy an actual soap opera?

About Author

Once upon a time, there was a young nerd from the Midwest, who loved Matter-Eater Lad and the McKenzie Brothers... If pop culture were a maze, Matthew would be the Minotaur at its center. Were it a mall, he'd be the Food Court. Were it a parking lot, he’d be the distant Cart Corral where the weird kids gather to smoke, but that’s not important right now... Matthew enjoys body surfing (so long as the bodies are fresh), writing in the third person, and dark-eyed women. Amongst his weaponry are such diverse elements as: Fear! Surprise! Ruthless efficiency! An almost fanatical devotion to pop culture! And a nice red uniform.

If you have space ships, mutants, capes, aliens, robots or all of them in there? Yep. Otherwise, nope.
