This week, for some reason, my daughter has decided to marathon Season 3 of ‘The Good Place’, featuring Janet, the robot woman who is neither of those things.  Able to summon anything out of the ether, and always perfectly pleasant about it, her evolution as a character (and D’Arcy Carden’s delightfully subtle performances) become the centerpiece of the season.  I haven’t been this invested in an artificial person’s journey to humanity since The Red Tornado adopted children back in the 80s, leading to today’s homunculous query…

The MS-QOTD (pronounced, as always, “misquoted”) still has a soft spot for Aaron “Machine Man” Stack, late of nextwave, created by Jack Kirby doing a riff on Stanley Kubrick, asking:  Who is the best artificial person in all of pop culture?

Once upon a time, there was a young nerd from the Midwest, who loved Matter-Eater Lad and the McKenzie Brothers... If pop culture were a maze, Matthew would be the Minotaur at its center. Were it a mall, he'd be the Food Court. Were it a parking lot, he’d be the distant Cart Corral where the weird kids gather to smoke, but that’s not important right now... Matthew enjoys body surfing (so long as the bodies are fresh), writing in the third person, and dark-eyed women. Amongst his weaponry are such diverse elements as: Fear! Surprise! Ruthless efficiency! An almost fanatical devotion to pop culture! And a nice red uniform.
