Back in the old days, when comics spent more time on character moments and downtime, there were a lot of cute moments where our favorite heroes played together.  The X-Men had their softball games, the Justice League would occasionally have a cookout and the Avengers had their recurring poker game.  Weirdly enough, it always seemed to be hosted by The Thing of the Fantastic Four, but the various denizens of the Marvel Universe would throw cards and enjoy each others’ company (and perhaps a few beers), leading to today’s Joker-is-wild query…

The MS-QOTD (pronounced, as always, “misquoted”) would have to watch in multiple directions for multiple kinds of cheating, but I’d choose the crew of ‘Serenity’, asking: What fictional group would you most like to join for a game of poker?

Once upon a time, there was a young nerd from the Midwest, who loved Matter-Eater Lad and the McKenzie Brothers... If pop culture were a maze, Matthew would be the Minotaur at its center. Were it a mall, he'd be the Food Court. Were it a parking lot, he’d be the distant Cart Corral where the weird kids gather to smoke, but that’s not important right now... Matthew enjoys body surfing (so long as the bodies are fresh), writing in the third person, and dark-eyed women. Amongst his weaponry are such diverse elements as: Fear! Surprise! Ruthless efficiency! An almost fanatical devotion to pop culture! And a nice red uniform.

  1. Well, thinking of the old TNG poker games, my first thought is a selection of the DS9 gallery. Namely Quark, Garak, Odo, Dukat, Martok, O’Brien & Dax (Either Jadzia or Ezri would work – both would fit the dynamic)

Alternatively: Iron Man, Thor, Professor X and Magneto. Honestly, it would be worth it just for the banter of Tony Stark constantly accusing Xavier of using his powers to cheat.

  2. Lemmy Caution (@_Lemmy_Caution) on

The poker game from the M*A*S*H episode “Deal Me Out”. It’s got Sidney and Pat Morita and the introduction of Flagg and the famous Whiplash Hwang. It’s got it all!
