When I was in college, Marvel Comics released several inexplicable swimsuit specials for fans who wondered about Wonder Man’s junk or Psylocke’s love of the slingshot thong.  Memorable for all the wrong reasons, they’re an example of the beach episode tradition seen in manga, a tradition that even the gang from ‘It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia’ has honored.  Everyone from The Brady Bunch to the Dinosaucers have taken an episode off to go swimming, leading to today’s trapped-in-the-RV query…

The MS-QOTD (pronounced, as always, “misquoted”) still thinks that Inferno and Matter-Eater Lad making such a hash of the Legion’s trip to Atlantis has to be up there for me, asking: What’s the best break-in-the-action beach episode in all of pop culture?

Once upon a time, there was a young nerd from the Midwest, who loved Matter-Eater Lad and the McKenzie Brothers... If pop culture were a maze, Matthew would be the Minotaur at its center. Were it a mall, he'd be the Food Court. Were it a parking lot, he’d be the distant Cart Corral where the weird kids gather to smoke, but that’s not important right now... Matthew enjoys body surfing (so long as the bodies are fresh), writing in the third person, and dark-eyed women. Amongst his weaponry are such diverse elements as: Fear! Surprise! Ruthless efficiency! An almost fanatical devotion to pop culture! And a nice red uniform.

  1. The Friends episode at the beach. Joey digs a huge hole that gets filled with water, the gang plays strip poker, Rachel convinces Ross’s girlfriend to shave her head, Monica gets stung by a jellyfish and has to have Chandler help her by way of really gross remedy. It’s a great episode.
