Thanks to the magic of reruns, I recently re-watched the episode of ‘Family Guy’ wherein Brian is hit by a car and dies, and it was… weirdly moving. Even knowing how it all shakes down and how it’s entirely a short-term development, it was an unexpectedly meaningful death, followed by Stewie’s acceptance of his best friend’s mortality. The fact that a show about cartoon sociopaths, filled with non-sequiturs and cutaways that amount to nothing but cheap-shot jokes could successfully generate that level of emotion was pretty amazing, leading to today’s freakin’ sweet query…
The MS-QOTD (pronounced, as always, “misquoted”) was moved nearly to tears at the “death” of the Tenth Doctor, even though it was followed immediately by a regeneration, asking: What’s the most unexpectedly meaningful death in pop culture?

The grey furred Ewok who died in Return of the Jedi.
Data in Star Trek Nemesis. Never saw it coming and I remember I gasped out loud when it happened.
