When I was in college, we had a number of Public Service Announcements that we aired incessantly, as the university radio station was a non-profit entity and we didn’t get a whole lot of commercials.  As such, the Crash Test Dummies, the dangers of Radon and a particularly memorable story about Koko the Gorilla involving feces and her trainer all stick with me.  As the overnight Master Control operator at several television stations, I got even more exposure, from MacGruff the Crime Dog to Eddie the Eagle and more, PSA after PSA until my brains turned to cottage cheese, leading to today’s Ad Council query…

The MS-QOTD (pronounced, as always, “misquoted”) reminds you to STOP!  Don’t TOUCH!  Leave the AREA!  Tell an ADULT, asking: What’s the most memorable PSA (Public Service Announcement) in your pop-culture memory?

Once upon a time, there was a young nerd from the Midwest, who loved Matter-Eater Lad and the McKenzie Brothers... If pop culture were a maze, Matthew would be the Minotaur at its center. Were it a mall, he'd be the Food Court. Were it a parking lot, he’d be the distant Cart Corral where the weird kids gather to smoke, but that’s not important right now... Matthew enjoys body surfing (so long as the bodies are fresh), writing in the third person, and dark-eyed women. Amongst his weaponry are such diverse elements as: Fear! Surprise! Ruthless efficiency! An almost fanatical devotion to pop culture! And a nice red uniform.

It’s either the fried egg “this is your brain on drugs; any questions?”

“Belt your brother, Buckle Up; Belt your sister, Buckle up; Go belt someone today!” Trying to get people to wear seat belts using playful catchy tunes making familial abuse sound fun? Only the eighties.

  3. Omgosh, I had forgotten the fried egg one. But, man, that was on all the time!

First one I thought of was “Only YOU can prevent forest fires”
