This week, I got to go to my polling place to vote, which means that I had to drive past the F-4 Phantom jet at the local museum to get there, something that always makes me happy.  Maybe it’s the delta-wing design, maybe it’s the novelty of living so close to an air museum, but for some reason that fighter plane always makes me happy.  It’s right up there with the F-14 I loved as a kid, thanks to G.I. Joe’s Skystriker, or Luke Skywalker’s X-Wing, leading to today’s aeronautical query…

The MS-QOTD (pronounced, as always, “misquoted”) thinks that people who worry about the ‘sitting duck’ comment miss the fact that the Rebellion of a galaxy, far, far away clearly uses a modern English alphabet, asking: What’s the coolest fighter plane/ship of all?

Once upon a time, there was a young nerd from the Midwest, who loved Matter-Eater Lad and the McKenzie Brothers... If pop culture were a maze, Matthew would be the Minotaur at its center. Were it a mall, he'd be the Food Court. Were it a parking lot, he’d be the distant Cart Corral where the weird kids gather to smoke, but that’s not important right now... Matthew enjoys body surfing (so long as the bodies are fresh), writing in the third person, and dark-eyed women. Amongst his weaponry are such diverse elements as: Fear! Surprise! Ruthless efficiency! An almost fanatical devotion to pop culture! And a nice red uniform.

  1. It’s hard to narrow that one down. WWII, I am fond of the Flying Tigers version of the P-40 War hawk. Modern would be the A-10 Warthog. Movies, would be the X-wing, of course.
