From an 80s nerd kid perspective, I had it pretty good in the toy department: While I never had an Optimus Prime, I still have some of the Transformers that I liked better, and managed to snag both the AT-AT and Millennium Falcon for my Star Wars figures.  (Never actually got a Han Solo to pilot it, but Walrusman was cooler anyways.)  Still, there are a few things that qualify as the “toy you wish you had” for me, like the M.A.S.K. Thunderhawk or the G.I. Joe aircraft carrier, leading to today’s childish query…

The MS-QOTD (pronounced, as always, “misquoted”) was always too tall and/or too heavy for the cool Big Wheels and Green Machines of the world, which is a very minor regret for me even to this day, asking: What one lost item of your youth was the toy you wish you had?

Once upon a time, there was a young nerd from the Midwest, who loved Matter-Eater Lad and the McKenzie Brothers... If pop culture were a maze, Matthew would be the Minotaur at its center. Were it a mall, he'd be the Food Court. Were it a parking lot, he’d be the distant Cart Corral where the weird kids gather to smoke, but that’s not important right now... Matthew enjoys body surfing (so long as the bodies are fresh), writing in the third person, and dark-eyed women. Amongst his weaponry are such diverse elements as: Fear! Surprise! Ruthless efficiency! An almost fanatical devotion to pop culture! And a nice red uniform.

  1. Pretty much any SP License from Dekaranger. Even the Power Rangers equivalent would suffice, but I would ideally prefer the actual Bandai of Japan toy or the more recent Super Sentai Artisan release.

But if we go back to my actual childhood and not just my relatively younger days, I second the GI Joe USS Flagg aircraft carrier playset.
