Major Spoilers Question of the Day: Third Wheel Edition

I don’t know about you guys, but I have a visceral reaction to episodes of ‘How I Met Your Mother’ where Ted Mosby is treated as a Third Wheel in the relationships of his best friends.  It’s probably just my history, but for some reason it’s incredibly unpleasant to watch a group that is usually so together (and even dysfunctionally codependent) suddenly decide one of them is unwanted.  Of course, Ted is that rare case where the lead character becomes the butt-monkey of the series, leading to today’s exclusionary query…

The MS-QOTD (pronounced, as always, “misquoted”) feels bad for Harry Potter once Hermione and Ron start figuring out their relationship, asking: What fictional Third Wheel do you have the most sympathy for?

Once upon a time, there was a young nerd from the Midwest, who loved Matter-Eater Lad and the McKenzie Brothers... If pop culture were a maze, Matthew would be the Minotaur at its center. Were it a mall, he'd be the Food Court. Were it a parking lot, he’d be the distant Cart Corral where the weird kids gather to smoke, but that’s not important right now... Matthew enjoys body surfing (so long as the bodies are fresh), writing in the third person, and dark-eyed women. Amongst his weaponry are such diverse elements as: Fear! Surprise! Ruthless efficiency! An almost fanatical devotion to pop culture! And a nice red uniform.
