  1. I haven’t listed to this podcast in awhile (I still listen to Critical Hit every week, love it, love you guys) because I was really turned off by how consistently negative Ashley is. It seems like she hates and is annoyed by everything that doesn’t feature a young person of color.

Increased diversity is great. It’s great to love quality stuff made by quality people regardless of race or sex or orientation or whatever.

It is not great to dislike something just because it’s got white men in it. I’m a white man. I like to be in stuff. I like to make stuff. In what way is okay to say something is “boring” just because it’s got white people in it? What kind of a review is that?

I ran out of stuff in my queue and decided to give Major Spoilers a listen……aaaaaaaand was immediately met with hostile negativity (and ageism and racism). I don’t need to hear how this person isn’t right because they’re too old or too white. It’s just as upsetting as someone saying an actor or writer is too young or too black.

Don’t get me wrong I understand the racism inherent in an American culture built on the backs of the enslaved, the poor, and immigrants. That doesn’t mean white creators/actors can just be dismissed. It’s weird to me that Ashley denigrates whiteness so casually and often and, just as weird, that the pushback from the rest of the panel is extremely mild if there is any at all.

I really enjoy Major Spoilers and I don’t plan to cancel my monthly subscription or anything, but its upsetting to me that I can’t listen to the Major Spoilers Podcast because inevitably Ashley has something incredibly negative to say. Yes, it’s a little ridiculous that they’re going to bring back Patrick Stewart, but the problem isn’t that he’s old and white. I know a lot of old white guys. They’re pretty cool. They teach some of my favorite classes, they write some of my favorite things, they produce some of my favorite podcasts (looking at you Stephen).

Me negatively ranting about Ashley, does not lend my argument moral strength, I know, but I’ve been thinking about this for a while now. I kept it to myself, thinking maybe I was being too sensitive, or, maybe, I was being sexist because I subconsciously perceived Ashley’s criticism differently than the guys, so I just stopped listening. But now, having come back after nearly a year, I don’t think it’s a misconception on my part.

I’m not saying Ashley is a bad person, or that she’s racist or sexist. I don’t know her well enough to make that kind of claim. I am saying that her negativity on the show is a real buzzkill and it really ruins my mood so I have to stop listening, which is upsetting to me because I really enjoy the MS crew.

With that said, I wish you all the best. I look forward to what you make every week and I appreciate all the hard work it takes. Thank you for having a comment section where I can come and speak my mind.
