There have been rumblings lately about a movie outing for Jack Kirby’s Eternals, a series that the King created in his second run with Marvel in the late 70s.  On the one hand, I’m a fan of the characters (even in their confusing last incarnation, spearheaded by Neil Gaiman) and like the idea of an immortal group of hidden beings in the fringes of the Marvel Universe.  On the other hand, we just got through with Marvel editorial working overtime to make fetch happen with the Inhumans, a group of characters with more than a few similarities to the Eternals.  Heck, their backstory even involves the same Celestials interfering, and this week’s issue of the new Avengers book references as much during the Celestial conflict, leading to today’s ancient query…

The MS-QOTD (pronounced, as always, “misquoted”) is a fan, but also wonders how many casual fans even know who The Eternals actually are, asking: Are you psyched and/or interested in a revival of The Eternals?

Ruthless efficiency! An almost fanatical devotion to pop culture! And a nice red uniform.

  1. Well, small screen outings notwithstanding, the last time Marvel brought something I’d never heard of to the big screen, I got Guardians of the Galaxy, so sounds great I think.

I would say mildly interested. I don’t have any previous experience about Eternals, so don’t really know what to expect. I will check it out at some point though.

Not even the movies with Thanos wanted to recognize the word “Eternals.” I’m surprised that they’d think anybody’d want this. Must be time to renew trademark.

In the 80’s, I loved The Eternals, The Inhumans, Squadron Supreme, and any other 2nd or 3rd tier group. They were great comics, just without the high profile. With the Eternals, I loved the parallels with Greek gods and such. So they were very special to me.

That said, considering how screwed up I consider the Inhumans now (to the point that I don’t even like them), I am sure that The Eternals reinvention will be unlike anything I remember. So I can’t get excited for it. I can just hope for some new great stories to come out of it. Excelsior!

(still hoping for a Strikeforce Moritori series on Netflix…)
