Originally we thought the Chilling Adventures of Sabrina would head to The CW, but Archie Comics has announced Netflix as picked up the show for a two season run on the online network.
Developed by Archie Comics Chief Creative Officer, Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, the one-hour dark drama/horror project will debut on Netflix, though we do not have an official release date at this time. SABRINA will draw from the critically acclaimed CHILLING ADVENTURES OF SABRINA comic book series from Archie Comics written by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa and artist Robert Hack, detailing the compelling and shocking re-imagining of Sabrina the Teenage Witch’s occult origins. This dark coming-of-age story deals with horror, the occult, and witchcraft and will see Sabrina struggle to reconcile her dual nature of being half-witch and half-mortal while protecting her family and the world from the forces of evil.
Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, will be the showrunner for the series (he is also the showrunner for Riverdale), and will be directed by Lee Toland Kreiger. Berlanti Productions along with Warner Brothers Studios will produce the series. Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schecter, Jon Goldwater, Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa and Lee Toland Krieger serve as executive producers.
What is interesting about this announcement is originally this show was going to appear on The CW, which would have generated 20-23 episodes. My guess is, Netflix picked this up after CW passed, and turned a single season into two seasons of 10-episodes each.
