Around the turn of the last century, the Fox network (known for its restraint and taste) blatantly tried to recreate the success of “That 70’s Show” with a spin-off/knock-off/rip-off called “That 80’s Show.”  It was pretty much awful but it did leave one impression on me, in the form of angry punk-rock girl, June Tuesday, often described as “Scary Hot”.  It’s the perfect descriptor for her snarling, black-lipsticked, switchblade-packing allure, and that turn of phrase that has stuck with me to this day.  Oftentimes, I find myself thinking how cute/hot/attractive the designated “dark” character is, which explains my love for cartoon Raven and for angry Debra, who shaved her head after Lucas lost Joe’s money.  (However, evil teen witch Nancy from ‘The Craft’ is just a deal-breaker for me, so it’s not universal…)  Perhaps it all goes back to my childhood crush on the Baroness, or the fact that the girl next door looked just like Jim Steranko’s rendition of The Viper, leading to today’s gothique query…

The MS-QOTD (pronounced, as always, “misquoted”) notes, apropos of nothing, that it’s family legend that I am blood-related to a notorious actress who fits this role, though this has never been conclusively proven or disproven to my satisfaction, asking: Which fictional character best fits your definition of Scary Hot?

Once upon a time, there was a young nerd from the Midwest, who loved Matter-Eater Lad and the McKenzie Brothers... If pop culture were a maze, Matthew would be the Minotaur at its center. Were it a mall, he'd be the Food Court. Were it a parking lot, he’d be the distant Cart Corral where the weird kids gather to smoke, but that’s not important right now... Matthew enjoys body surfing (so long as the bodies are fresh), writing in the third person, and dark-eyed women. Amongst his weaponry are such diverse elements as: Fear! Surprise! Ruthless efficiency! An almost fanatical devotion to pop culture! And a nice red uniform.

  1. For animated characters, aside from the obvious answer of The Baroness, I have to hand it to Lust from “Fullmetal Alchemist”.

Does Tenaya 7 of “Power Rangers RPM” count? Cause she’s not really goth dark, but she’s evil. And hot.

Otherwise, I’ll go with the weird human forms of Magiranger’s Vancuria, Nai and Mea (Mare in some translations). She goes from a weird vampire monster into two… I don’t know, goth maid girls?

  2. Frederick Pagliarulo Jr. (a.k.a. Darth Macho) on

I’ve had a crush on Elvira, Mistress of Darkness for as long as I can remember. I believe she’s really a vampire because she looks the same as she did 30 years ago.
