So here’s one thing I love about the off-season games–getting insights into other DM styles. I have to admit that at the beginning of the Weird Western game I was a bit put off by the long exposition scenes Samantha had written into game. Then I realized that is because my players usually have no idea how to keep character and player knowledge separated. Now as the story unfolds and goes along, I am really enjoying how the reveals in these exposition scenes fills in some of the gaps and connects some of the dots for listeners.
These off-stage moments (and usually flashbacks like the one at the end of Ep. 419) help to weave a richer tapestry of the world without directly changing anything in the story. I’m not sure I could use this technique with any players in my usual games, but I like seeing how this technique can be used with a lot of very experienced players like the Critical Hit group who have shown over the years the ability to keep player and character knowledge separate. It’s a technique that I’ve honestly never thought of using or never had used by DMs in groups when I was a player, but I am glad to hear someone using it and getting a feel for how that can be incorporated into a larger campaign.
Glad you enjoy it! Every DM brings something different to the table – If other DMs can use something we share, then great! If you think it won’t work for your players, then that is okay, too.
