I really enjoy listening to Stephen and Ashley talk about what happened to the young star of the Archie series. I would like to point out however that when talking about actors working Up to 16 hours, you also have to think about the many members of the crew who are often working well in excess of that. Grips, electrics AD’sand PA’s Are often working as long, if not longer then the talent are, Driving in vehicles, setting up equipment, both heavy and technical, and rarely give them the option of having someone drive them home at the end of a 16 to 18 hour day.
I will also point out that it is unlikely That this 16 hour day was the exception. It is more likely that this was probably a second or third 16 hour day of the shooting week, especially if you’re dealing with a season ending episode. As you get closer to the end of the show, it’s my experience that they throw more and more at shoot to get more and more done at the end. (as we like to say Fridays are for flogging) Many production companies tend to have the mentality that the best way to deal with the problem is the throw money at it especially when it comes to dealing with crew, Which is why the overtime that Ashley mentioned really doesn’t do a lot to dissuade these companies. They know that they can get away with whatever they want if they just pay people off, and they’re really not concerned over the safety factor when they can solve the problem with triple time pay.
I know many people I’ve worked with who have had minor accidents, and a few major ones, due to travelling exhausted at the end of a show. Even myself, I have to admit I have seen that yellow line suddenly appear on the wrong side of my truck, when driving home from a set.
Yes, the discussion was about the actor side (since Ashley is an actress), but I am well aware that the crew is putting in a ton of work as well. Thanks for your comments, Ray! Be safe driving home from those long days on set.
