1) THE HARD-TRAVELIN’ HEROES
Starting with a very pointed question (“I been readin’ about you…How you work for the blue skins.. And how on a planet someplace you helped out the orange skins…And you done considerable for the purple skins! Only there’s skins you never bothered with–! The black skins! I want to know… How come?!”), the defining adventure of Silver Age Hal Jordan and Oliver Queen kicks off. Deciding their perspectives as space cop and rich fat cat vigilante aren’t wide enough, our heroes get in a battered pickup truck and head out to find post-Vietnam America. What follows is a story that examines prejudice, religion, drug use, feminism and more through the prism of a superhero tale, and also drives some of the final nails into the coffin of the aging and increasingly irrelevant Comics Code Authority.
Thanks to Faithful Spoilerite and Kablammakus co-conspirator Thomas Perkins (@TNPerkins4) for this week’s topic. Feel free to follow along @MightyKingCobra for more Ten Things madness on Twitter or check out the full archive here! As with any set of like items, these aren’t meant to be hard and fast or absolutely complete, since Dr. Coogan reminds us that the traditional superhero, by definition, has a pro-social agenda in their DNA.
