In regards to the Black Panther cancellations, I’m personally not surprised. Black Panther titles have typically not sold well at all. The majority of readers just don’t care about Black Panther right now. I read the Crew #1 and didn’t think it was very good at all and judging by sales, others agreed. We didn’t even stock issues for the racks after #1, just club members. While the movies do bring in some new readers, it isn’t as many as you might think and, as usual, it is keeping them as repeat buyers that is the challenge. Plus, it is usually the toys that kids are interested in. Marvel might be taking a wait and see approach with Black Panther before spending money on new titles.
I’m not too worried about Black Panther and fairly certain by the time the movie comes out, there will be at least one new title. Guardians didn’t get 67 books until after the sequel came out. It seems like the publishers also change the current books to reflect what is in the movies (Aquaman now has long hair and a beard in the awesome Forge #1, for no reason). I think the Watchman trailer helped sell so many copies because of the comic being held in such high regard (“The greatest graphic novel of all time, that anyone ever read ever etc”). and that trailer was extremely well done, better than an average comic book movie trailer.
Sorry for the long winded comment. Just my thoughts. I’m probably (and usually am) wrong. -Wilson-
On the Black Panther issue. This sounds like you guys being upset for the purpose of being upset(and the no news comment at the start of the podcast only reinforces that view). At no point do you guys talk about the stunt writer, 9-11 truther, Ta-Nehisi Coates. Who is writing the book you would expect Ta-Nehisi Coates to write and to not talk about how that has to be at least some of a drain on other Black Panther titles seems highly disingenuous. I mean why should Marvel or DC or anyone talk to the public? Nothing good every comes from it. At best nothing bad comes from it, that is not an environment where you talk to people and that is the current internet environment.
I would also add I teach high school. When I talk to my students about comics they don’t talk about the comic books. Sometimes I see kids checking out trade paper backs from the library but never stuff they own. Even in an age where its easier than ever to buy comic issues. Honestly most would just rather place minecraft(I know even in high school), or clash or clans, or the like. I think there is a lot of people young and old that just want a complete story and monthly comics aren’t that. Just like there are more people that watch movies than read books. I think there are more people that watch comic book movies than read comics, and that’s fine we shouldn’t force that on people.
The real thing Marvel should care about is having Black Panther trades ready, these titles at best would add 3 volumes to that library. Maybe the right hand and left hand aren’t talking but so far there has be little need for them to talk Marvel is making money hand over fist with there movies and until Disney starts having money problems they have little reason to care what the comics people are doing as long as they aren’t causing trouble.
On a side note, most of the options stated at the start of this podcasts are bland options which I can get on almost any comic book sites or comics youtube channel. I’ve been around the site for a long time, I came here because your prospective were different then what I was getting in other place but after 10+ years its just same bland product that everyone else is putting out on the comic book side. Every time you don’t use Trump’s name, every time you get all SJW you sound like 99% of other comics commentary out there, and you can keep doing that I’m sure most of your listeners like it but I doubt your growing at the rate you want to be based on the fact your always plugin for more money.
Anyways for me it was honestly a mistake to start listening to the show again and I’m sad to see the state its in but sadly just like comic books themselves there just isn’t much in the way of good comic book commentary and I’m sad to see the state of this show.
Good luck, I’m out space cowboy.

It sounds like you’ve missed our commentary on shifting the industry to the trade, and stunt casting in writing, and more… too bad you didn’t listen to those shows. Things we’ve talked about in great detail. The point of this news discussion wasn’t that Marvel cancelled two Black Panther titles, but the business misstep of doing it right at the time the trailer dropped. If you were following the conversation closely, you would hear we move away from Black Panther and the Crew to focus more on World of Wakanda (written by Roxane Gay) because the World of Wakanda benefits more from the trailer than The Crew.
It seems you are more upset we didn’t approach the discussion in the way you wanted us to.
Sorry to see you go, but it ease some of your fears – yes, Major Spoilers continues to grow at a great rate. We don’t have to rely on as many advertisers as we’ve had to in the past (I turned down three this morning) because we have such a great group of patrons who see the value in supporting indie shows like ours.
I think what is really sad in your entire comment is you say you are a teacher and then complain about those who want social equality among people… I really hope you are treating all of your students fairly and equally and are concerned that everyone deserves a chance to learn and succeed, and you aren’t one of those dudebro teachers that lift up the jocks and put down female students and people of color. That one comment says a lot about your character, which I hope is more of a hastily typed mistake than a true look at who you are as a teacher of young impressionable minds.
Bye!
If you see “SJW” as a the slur you seem to think it is, then yes, it was a mistake for you to listen to our show.
Sincere good luck to you, as well.
