This week, Ghost in the Shell opens nationwide. There are a lot of people who are eager to see Scarlett Johansson kick ass – even though Lucy came out years ago. There are also a large number of people who have no desire to see this movie at all.
Where do you stand?
In the near future, Major (Scarlett Johansson) is the first of her kind: A human saved from a terrible crash, who is cyber-enhanced to be a perfect soldier devoted to stopping the world’s most dangerous criminals. When terrorism reaches a new level that includes the ability to hack into people’s minds and control them, Major is uniquely qualified to stop it. As she prepares to face a new enemy, Major discovers that she has been lied to: her life was not saved, it was stolen. She will stop at nothing to recover her past, find out who did this to her and stop them before they do it to others. Based on the internationally acclaimed Japanese Manga, “The Ghost in the Shell.”

I’m not sure yet. I got no problem with actress choice because Major was a cyborg which used multiple bodies to begin with. That said, I’m not quite convinced yet but rather “intrigued” I’d say.
I really don’t see many movies in the theater any more, other than Marvel movies. Given the plot point of her having her body completely replaced, I honestly don’t much care what she looks like.
Loved the anime, skeptical about the direction they are taking the story in the film, from what I’ve heard. I’d still give it a try in theater but I’m not allowed to leave my office until after tax day.
There is nothing in what I’ve seen so far that makes me think it’s going to be anything more than just another watered down Hollywood remake
I’m not really going to see it because I’ll like the story. It looks like they tore apart all of the other storylines and added an angsty “Must find my true self!” revenge story over top. I’m most interested in the scenery. It looks gorgeous. I definitely don’t think ScarJo was the right choice for the lead role at all. This is going to be a big dumb shoot em up and I’ve been looking for an excuse to eat a bucket of popcorn.
Nope. I don’t see much in theaters due to lack of funds, but this is one I’m passing up even if the opportunity arises. I’ll watch it when it comes out on DVD or comes to TV because I like the source material and want to see what they did with it, but from what I’ve seen on commercials and promos, I’m not being reeled in. And just to be clear, I’m not one of those who thinks it was whitewashed or should have been an Asian actress (although I admit I would have liked that), I’m just not impressed with what I’ve seen.
Nope As I have seen it first time round and it’s not going to be as good As stand alone complex 1 and 2 so what’s the point.
I’ve never been enamored with ScarJo, wrong for every part she’s played. On the other hand I should see it before deciding to dismissing it.
No. Not because I don’t want to see it, but because it looks like the type of movie that I will be constantly rewinding and watching scenes over and over to catch all the visual nuances.
I am a Ghost in the Shell fan, but mostly of the anime series. In addition to the controversy regarding Scarlett Johansson, the fact they aren’t adapting the part of the franchise I’m most interested in, this adaptation feeling unnecessary and only for people who can’t deal with animation, as well as what looks to be changes to the story, all combine to make it so that am uninterested in seeing it.
Hollywood can’t even get Video Game movies right, and that’s far more mainstream than Anime. Sorry, but this just reeks of Dragon Ball Evolution to me – a fundamental misunderstanding of the franchise and medium in the name trying to cash in on a popular property.
That, and to me, I think a netflix series would have fit far better than a movie for this series.
I watched it on Thursday. Thought it was better than the anime.
