IT’S NEW COMIC BOOK DAY! #NCBD
The best day of the week just got a lot better with a new round of awesome comics arriving in stores this week. Staff members at Major Spoilers are here to help you with your comic book selection this week, with their roundup of comics they recommend.
ALL STAR BATMAN #8
Writer: Scott Snyder
Artist: Mark Morales, Giuseppe Camuncoli
Publisher: DC Comics
Cover Price: $4.99
SOLICITATION: “Hats and Bats”! Underestimate the Mad Hatter at your own peril. Batman takes on one of his most dangerous and deranged foes in a mind-bending tale from the powerhouse creative team of writer Scott Snyder and artist Giuseppe Camuncoli!
STEPHEN: This issue has the potential to anger a lot of Batman fans, especially when Scott Snyder attempts to rewrite Batman’s entire history. Fear not! This is Batman, after all, and the way the Dark Knight takes down the bad guy is very satisfying in a very familiar way.
AMERICAN GODS: SHADOW #1
Writers: Neil Gaiman, P. Craig Russell
Artists: Scott Hampton
Publisher: Dark Horse Comics
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: Originally published in 2001 by William Morrow and Headline, American Gods will be adapted into twenty-seven single issues with three story arcs: Shadows, My Ainsel, and The Moment of the Storm.
STEPHEN: I read American Gods last summer and absolutely loved it. That being said, there are moments that are harsh and disturbing. Some of those moments are included in this first issue of American Gods: Shadow from Dark Horse Comics. Definitely NOT for kids, but if you are someone that has always wanted to read American Gods, but would rather read a story with pictures, then pick up the first issue this week.
BATMAN #19
Writer: Tom King
Artist: David Finch, Danny Miki
Publisher: DC Comics
Cover Price: $2.99
SOLICITATION: “I AM BANE” part four! Batman is losing…Bane is going to break him for good this time. The Dark Knight must turn to a very unlikely weapon to beat Bane once and for all!
WAYNE: Bane always makes me nervous after all that back-breaking stuff! It’s one of the few times I feel Batman is outmatched physically! What’s gonna happen? I gotta know!
BATWOMAN #1
Writer: Marguerite Bennett, James Tynion IV
Artist: Steve Epting
Publisher: DC Comics
Cover Price: $2.99
SOLICITATION: “The Many Arms Of Death” part one! At last – Batwoman is back in her own ongoing series! On the island nation of Coryana, anything goes for members of the criminal underworld… and during her lost years after being drummed out of the military, Kate Kane found a kind of refuge there. But now, a deadly new bioweapon is available in the markets of Coryana, and Batwoman will have to face up to the things she did in those days… and the people she left behind, some of whom would be happier to see her dead than alive! Writer Marguerite Bennett (DC BOMBSHELLS) is joined by James Tynion IV (DETECTIVE COMICS) and superstar artist Steve Epting (Captain America, Velvet) to present an epic Batwoman story that will alter the course of her life forever! This one’s unmissable!
WAYNE: Batwoman is back in her own monthly title. I’ve enjoyed her every time she’s appeared, so I’m looking forward to this one greatly!
FOREVER WAR #2
Writer: Joe Haldeman
Artist: Marvano
Publisher: Titan Comics
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: The true horrors of war are only just becoming clear to Mandella, Potter and the rest of their company. In their first encounter with other lifeforms, with another world, they see that violence can happen in the blink of an eye, and the sinister extent of their training is revealed in full…
MATTHEW: Truly gorgeous art and a haunting story about the price of war. Totally worth tracking this one down (and, if you have the time and inclination, Haldeman’s original stories, but that’s not important right now.)
INVINCIBLE #134
Writer: Robert Kirkman
Artist: Nathan Fairbairn, Ryan Ottley
Publisher: Image Comics
Cover Price: $2.99
SOLICITATION: “THE END OF ALL THINGS,” Part Two The march to the end continues! Invincible must accept that Thragg can’t be defeated without him, and for the good of the universe, he’s going to have to risk his life to stop him!
STEPHEN: The countdown to the end of the series continues, and darn it if I can’t not stop reading this series. It was a real game changer for me regarding capes and tights comics, and I’m hoping the ending of the series is just as satisfying as the beginning.
JUSTICE LEAGUE #17
Writer: Bryan Hitch
Artist: Fernando Pasarin, Matt Ryan
Publisher: DC Comics
Cover Price: $2.99
SOLICITATION: “TIMELESS” part three! The Justice League’s epic war through time continues as Superman confronts the leader of the Timeless army, who gives the Man of Steel an impossible choice: save Krypton from exploding – or save his friends!
WAYNE: This book is something special, but then I look forward to all the Justice League comics! Interesting concept, so I’m anxious to read it!
SEX CRIMINALS #17
Writer: Matt Fraction
Artist: Chip Zdarsky
Publisher: Image Comics
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: You think it’s hard being a sex criminal? Try being a sex cop for, like, an issue, give or take. ALSO THIS ISSUE: a special sequence guest-colored by a MYSTERY COLORIST whose name rhymes exactly with “ELIZABETH BREITWEISER.”
MATTHEW: This is perhaps my favorite comic right now, unless The Wicked + The Divine is out that particular week… Or Squirrel Girl. But right now? Fave-rave and you need to check it out!
SUPER-SONS #2
Writer: Peter J. Tomasi
Artist: Jorge Jimenez
Publisher: DC Comics
Cover Price: $2.99
SOLICITATION: Robin and Superboy – in the clutches of Lex Luthor! The boys are in big trouble! How exactly are they supposed to explain what’s happened to Superman and Batman? Plus, Kid Amazo’s power grows, and this tyrant in the making is about to make life miserable for the Super Sons!
MATTHEW: The art isn’t 100% to my liking, but it’s got character, and the story is compelling so far. I’m onboard for the foreseeable future, even with Damian being all “Damian” about things.
