BALTIMORE THE RED KINGDOM #2
Writer: Mike Mignola, Christopher Golden
Artist: Peter Bergting
Publisher: Dark Horse Comics
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: Protected by his armies marching on Rome, the Red King seems invulnerable as he takes his place at the Vatican for his coronation. How can the resistance hope to get close enough to confront him in human form?
STEPHEN: This has been a fantastic series since it began oh so many years ago. If this is the end of Baltimore, then Baltimore The Red Kingdom #2 is a must read this week.
BATMAN #18
Writer: Tom King
Artist: David Finch, Danny Miki
Publisher: DC Comics
Cover Price: $2.99
SOLICITATION: “I AM BANE” part three! Bane broke the bat before, but it wasn’t enough-now he’s going to break everyone else! Bane is coming, and no one is safe!
STEPHEN: Make no mistake, this is totally a retelling of the origins of both Batman and Bane, but it is the way their stories are told that make this issue worth picking up this week.
WAYNE: Bane has been quite the foe for Batman for decades, so we’ll see how “brains” over “brawn” takes place this time!
DAREDEVIL BY MARK WAID OMNIBUS HC VOL 01
Writer: Mark Waid, Greg Rucka
Artist: Various
Publisher: Marvel
Cover Price: $100
SOLICITATION: The devil is reborn – and his adventures will leave you gasping for air! The Man Without Fear visits his unique blend of blind justice on Klaw, the Megacrime cartel and the Mole Man, while the hotly contested battle to secure the Omega Drive will require Daredevil to team up with Spider-Man and not one but two Punishers! But as size-changing scientist Hank Pym enters Matt Murdock’s head to destroy nanobots implanted by Doctor Doom, will saving Daredevil’s brain cost Matt his mind? Ghosts from the past will haunt DD, while Matt faces a life-or-death drama of his own. With new enemies, new friends and a “grinnin’ in the face of hell” attitude, Mark Waid delivers an Eisner Award-winning run like no other! Collecting DAREDEVIL (2011) #1-27 and #10.1, AMAZING SPIDER-MAN (1999) #677, AVENGING SPIDER-MAN #6 and PUNISHER (2011) #10.
CHRIS: If you’re like me and fell off of Waid’s Daredevil run a while ago, this would be the book to pick up. It comes with a hefty price tag but from everything I’ve heard, a the little bit I’ve read, it’s well worth the price.
DEATH OF HAWKMAN #6
Writer: Marc Andreyko
Artist: John Livesay, Aaron Lopresti
Publisher: DC Comics
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: The odds are impossible, but Hawkman and Adam Strange must team up as the fates of Rann, Thanagar and the known universe hangs in the balance. But can anyone – or anything – stop Despero? Don’t miss the finale of this red-hot miniseries!
WAYNE: Is the end of Hawkman? I sure hope not, so I have to read it!
RAT QUEENS #1
Writer: Kurtis J. Wiebe
Artist: Owen Gieni
Publisher: Image Comics
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: “CAT KINGS AND OTHER GARYS,” Part One-NEW STORY ARC! The Rat Queens are back! Betty, Violet, Dee, Braga, and Hannah return! Palisade is still a rat-infested troll’s ass, and everyone still hates Gary. It’s been a while since the Queens have done a good slaughter, so join them as they get back to the basics of killing monsters and drinking away the profits! A fresh, soft reboot to the head for the Rat Queens with artist OWEN GIENI!
CHRIS: Life was missing something with Rat Queens being gone. That’s been fixed now that it is returning with a new issue #1. I’m excited for this “soft reboot” and hope it brings in new readers as well as old ones.
STEPHEN: Yes, this issue is on my pull list this week. With such a long break, and a new artist on board, I hope Kurtis Wiebe is able to bring the old magic back without leaving a foul taste in my mouth.
SMOKETOWN #1
Writer: Phillip Kennedy Johnson
Artist: Scott Van Domelen
Publisher: Scout Comics
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: From acclaimed writer Phillip Kennedy Johnson (Warlords of Appalachia, Last Sons of America), and introducing artist Scott Van Domelen, comes the first in an interconnecting series of chapters in the tradition of David Lapham’s Stray Bullets, Brubaker/Phillips’ Criminal, and Pulp Fiction. Each chapter explores the final days of a murdered soldier from a new perspective, each one exposing the criminal side of a small industrial Pennsylvania town. In Chapter One, “Killing Marcus,” after a life-or-death situation, a battered wife and mother has until sunrise to cover up her husband’s murder, not knowing that her actions have set her up for a confrontation with some even more dangerous people.
WAYNE: The concept of this book really intrigues me, so I’m going to be reading from issue #1! Looks great, sounds great!
