7) THE BLACK PANTHER (1966)
As mentioned before, the Black Panther has a lot in common with Lion Man and several other African jungle characters that predate him. (Waka, Prince of the Bantu, for instance, was a Marvel character in the 1950s, though he is mostly forgotten nowadays.) Unlike his predecessors, though, T’Challa of Wakanda is 100% superhero, and avoids the usual loincloth and headdress trappings. He’s also a technological genius on a pa with Mr. Fantastic himself, and The Black Panther is often cited as the first real superhero who is black. (His first appearance has also gotten Retro Review treatment, here.)

I’d like to put an honorable mention for Nubia, the black Wonder Woman, who appeared in Wonder Woman comics in the early 1970s.
While Nubia may not be the first black female superhero, she was the first to have a Mego doll made of her:

Mal Duncan (1970), aka Hornblower, aka Guardian, aka Herald, aka Vox, of the Teen Titans deserves an honorable mention.
