OTTO BINDER: THE LIFE AND WORK OF A COMIC BOOK AND SCIENCE FICTION VISIONARY
by Bill Schelly
Otto Binder: The Life and Work of a Comic Book and Science Fiction Visionary chronicles the career of Otto Binder, from pulp magazine author to writer of Supergirl, Captain Marvel, and Superman comics. As the originator of the first sentient robot in literature (“I, Robot,” published in Amazing Stories in 1939 and predating Isaac Asimov’s collection of the same name), Binder’s effect on science fiction was profound. Within the world of comic books, he created or co-created much of the Superman universe, including Smallville; Krypto, Superboy’s dog; Supergirl; and the villain Braniac. Binder is also credited with writing many of the first “Bizarro” storylines for DC Comics, as well as for being the main writer for the Captain Marvel comics. In later years, Binder expanded from comic books into pure science writing, publishing dozens of books and articles on the subject of satellites and space travel as well as UFOs and extraterrestrial life. Comic book historian Bill Schelly tells the tale of Otto Binder through comic panels, personal letters, and interviews with Binder’s own family and friends. Schelly weaves together Binder’s professional successes and personal tragedies, including the death of Binder’s only daughter and his wife’s struggle with mental illness. A touching and human story, Otto Binder: The Life and Work of a Comic Book and Science Fiction Visionary is a biography that is both meticulously researched and beautifully told, keeping alive Binder’s spirit of scientific curiosity and whimsy.

Very nice! I’m someone who has always liked Legion but never got too deep about their history or anything like that and this is exactly the thing to change that.
Congratulations on the new podcast!
One thing I’ve noticed: the MSP podcasts often have images saved with them in the neighborhood of 0.5 to 1.0 MB (and sometimes much larger). This inflates the storage size by the same amount. This is much larger than other podcasts; is this intentional?
What image are you talking about specifically?
I’m referring to the image that appears as the ‘cover’ image for the mp3. This will be the image (IIRC the Album Art ID3 tag) that appears on my mp3 player.
For the case of the Legion Clubhouse #1, it is a 1 MB 2800×2800 pixels jpeg with 144 dpi resolution in both vertical and horizontal. I can’t tell exactly what the original name was, but the default name I got when trying to extract the image was “folder”. I use a tagging program to set the ID3 tag to v2.3 for any podcast (down from V2.4, as the automobile’s MP3 player will go backwards in time a minute if I power off while playing a V2.4 track) and I can see the size of the associated image.
My portable (dedicated) MP3 player is happiest with 300×300 sq.pixel image, but I was wondering if you keep the resolution high for a different set of players/customers. As another point of comparison, I looked at a random BBC podcast and they have the cover image as 608×608 sq. pix with only 72 dpi resolution, but this only adds 36 KB to the final MP3 size.
iTunes has an image size requirement of 1500px for album art – especially if the image is going to be used for a featured podcast spotlight on itunes.
Loved it! Thanks for doing this. Always the best quality and content for the low, low price we pay.
Not a problem! Hopefully we will be able to continue the show far into the future!
Great first episode. I really enjoy hearing you guys talk about the legion. Somehow in all of my comic book ranging I missed the legion entirely. Probably because I read comics mainly when I was younger and Marvel was just way cooler. Also, Marvel had those sweet Marvel Universe history’s where you could learn everything about everyone without having to pay for all the comics. But I digress, I really enjoyed the episode and I love having you guys on while I’m doing stuff around the house. It’s almost like I have real friends. Thanks guys.
You are welcome! Consider this show your encyclopedia of Legion knowledge..
Coming in late to the game here, but this is a great episode. I just got my Legion of Super-Heroes Omnibus hardcover and can follow along with the discussion at home. Thank you for all you do with Legion Clubhouse and all you other ventures!
Welcome!
