IT’S NEW COMIC BOOK DAY! #NCBD
The best day of the week just got a lot better with a new round of awesome comics arriving in stores this week. Staff members at Major Spoilers are here to help you with your comic book selection this week, with their roundup of comics they recommend.
ALL-STAR BATMAN #1
Writer: Scott Snyder
Artist: John Romita Jr., Danny Miki, Declan Shalvey
Publisher: DC Comics
Cover Price: $4.99
SOLICITATION: “My Own Worst Enemy” part four! So close and yet so far from his goal, Batman must now wrangle Two-Face out of his own assassin-filled riverboat casino before it plunges over Niagara Falls to their deaths! The Dark Knight will have to go all-in on the most deadly gamble of his life if he intends to make it out alive.
STEPHEN: I’ve heard nothing but good things about this run, and have enjoyed it myself since the beginning. Definitely worth checking out.
WAYNE: If you want to read a terrific comic this week, THIS IS IT! This book exemplifies why I read comics!
BATMAN/TMNT ADVENTURES #1
Writer: Matthew K. Manning
Artist: Jon Sommariva
Publisher: IDW Publishing
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: When villains start to mysteriously escape Arkham, Batman seeks to track them down. What happens when he discovers that they have left Gotham completely… and entered the TMNT’s New York City?
STEPHEN: An interesting setup, but no real team-up in this first issue. Still, if you love the animated universes of both of these characters, pick this book up.
CLEAN ROOM #13
Writer: Gail Simone
Artist: Jon Davis-Hunt
Publisher: Vertigo
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: In the aftermath of “Hell Above, Heaven Below,” we go back to the beginning to learn how Astrid was first affected after her hospitalization…through the eyes of one who cannot see what she sees: her would-be assassin and brother, Peter Mueller.
CHRIS: Gail Simone seems like such a nice woman but she has some darkness inside her somewhere. This book is so well written, horrifying and has some of the most exquisite and distrubing art in a comic. With the new Young Animal imprint, I hope this one doesn’t go away.
DOOM PATROL #3
Writer: Gerard Way
Artist: Nick Derington
Publisher: Young Animal
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: Casey Brinke has stepped through to the other side-but where exactly is that? Given all the bizarre, unexplainable things that have come into her life over the last couple of days-robot men and talking ambulances and a guy who literally thrives on negative energy-surely this new and surprising world she has uncovered can’t be any weirder. Right?
CHRIS: Gerard Way is channeling Grant Morrison but in a way that doesn’t feel like a horrible imitation. This book is only on its third issue and is one of my favorite DC comics. The weird characters and nature make for a unique and fun read but be prepared. Your brain may hurt a bit after reading it.
FLASH #4
Writer: Joshua Williamson
Artist: Felipe Watanabe, Kirk Albert
Publisher: DC Comics
Cover Price: $2.99
SOLICITATION: “THE SPEED OF DARKNESS” part one! A villain from The Flash’s history returns for the first time in years when The Shade visits Central City. But what does Opal City’s master of shadow want with Barry Allen and the newly christened Kid Flash?
WAYNE: I’ve always felt the Shade was an undervalued villain! Really looking forward to how this terrific creative team handles him talking on the Fastest Man Alive… and Kid Flash?
GREEN VALLEY #2
Writer: Max Landis
Artist: Giuseppe Camuncoli, Cliff Rathburn
Publisher: Image Comics
Cover Price: $2.99
SOLICITATION: “THEN CAME A BOY…”-MAX LANDIS & GIUSEPPE CAMUNCOLI’s epic adventure continues!
CHRIS: I’m really not a fan of the fantasy, knights and sword and sorcery genre but Max Landis did a wonderful story with the first issue that grabbed me as well as surprised. I’m really looking forward to this as Landis did the terrific Superman: American Alien that was equally wonderful.
INVINCIBLE IRON MAN #1
Writer: Brian Michael Bendis
Artist: Stefano Caselli
Publisher: Marvel Comics
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: From the violent streets of Chicago, a new armored hero rises! Clad in her very own Iron Man armor, Riri Williams is ready to show the Marvel Universe what she can do as the self-made hero of tomorrow. But is she ready for all the problems that come with stepping into Iron Man’s jet boots? Where’s a genius billionaire playboy philanthropist when you need one?
MATTHEW: Genius? Or Cheese Sandwich? Either way, I want to see how this one goes…
MEGA PRINCESS #1
Writer: Kelly Thompson
Artist: Brianne Drouhard
Publisher: Boom! Studios
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: During Princess Maxine’s 10th birthday, her fairy godmother grants her the gifts of EVERY fairy tale princess, which…sounds a lot cooler than it actually is, in Max’s opinion. She doesn’t want to sing on key or feel a pea under 20 mattresses-she wants to be a detective! At least the power to talk to animals is cool, but her pony Justine is downright saucy. They don’t get along. When her little brother, Prince Robert VI (better known as Baby Bobs), goes missing, Max and Justine are on the case, and her new Mega Princess powers just might come in handy after all!
MATTHEW: This sounds really rad. I’m in.
RESIDENT ALIEN #3
Writer: Peter Hogan
Artist: Steve Parkhouse
Publisher: Dark Horse Comics
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: Your resident doctor-detective is an alien! Dr. Harry tries to find a dead man’s daughter and expose a possible drug ring, while federal agents close in on him and Nurse Asta. More about Harry’s fiery crash landing and his first day on Earth is revealed! Peter Hogan (Tom Strong) and Steve Parkhouse (Doctor Who) continue their celebrated science-fiction/murder-mystery series!
WAYNE: This Concrete-like series is something different AND wonderful! Talk about your “outside perspective!” It’s drama at its comics highest, so don’t miss it!
WWE THEN NOW FOREVER #1
Writer: Dennis Hopeless, Ross Thibodeaux, Rob Schamberger, Derek Fridolfs
Artist: Daniel Bayliss, Rob Guillory, Rob Schamberger, Derik Fridolfs
Publisher: Boom! Studios
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: This oversized issue contains the WWE SDCC 2016 one-page comics along with a wealth of new content, celebrating the versatility and diversity of WWE throughout its various eras.
Includes the 20-page story “The Breaking of the Shield,” where Seth Rollins chose to betray his brothers Dean Ambrose and Roman Reigns at the behest of Triple H and the Authority.
MATTHEW: WWE heads back to the well. Will this be the WWE comic that makes the whole thing stick?
