IT’S NEW COMIC BOOK DAY! #NCBD
The best day of the week just got a lot better with a new round of awesome comics arriving in stores this week. Staff members at Major Spoilers are here to help you with your comic book selection this week, with their roundup of comics they recommend.
AQUAMAN #6
Writer: Dan Abnett
Artist: Brad Walker
Publisher: DC Comics
Cover Price: $2.99
SOLICITATION: “THE DROWNING” conclusion! As this first epic concludes, Aquaman and Mera are on the run for a crime they didn’t commit. They’ve fought through every kind of firepower the U.S. military has thrown. Now all that’s left between them and Atlantis is the Man of Steel…
JON: I never imagined myself reading Aquaman regularly. Credit to Dan Abnett, who has made this title a must read for me. If you haven’t given this series a chance yet, I highly recommend doing so as you’ll be pleasantly surprised.
BATMAN #6
Writer: Tom King
Artist: Ivan Reis, Joe Prado
Publisher: DC Comics
Cover Price: $2.99
SOLICITATION: “I AM GOTHAM” epilogue. In this stand-alone tale, Batman seeks redemption as he tries to keep Gotham Girl from going down a dangerous path. But can the Dark Knight save someone who doesn’t want to be saved?
JON: After an exceptional first arc, I’m really looking forward to Tom King’s epilogue to the “I Am Gotham” story. Despite not having David Finch on this book, Ivan Reis is a gifted artist in his own right so there’s no reason not to give this issue a shot.
CYBORG REBIRTH #1
Writer: John Semper, Jr.
Artist: Paul Pelletier, Sandra Hope, Tony Kordos
Publisher: DC Comics
Cover Price: $2.99
SOLICITATION: Victor Stone was once a star athlete and brilliant student with a bright future. But after a tragic accident destroyed over half of his body, Victor was kept alive by merging flesh with advanced technology. Today he is the Justice League co-founder called Cyborg. But is the young hero a man…or a machine that merely believes it’s a man?Victor Stone was once a star athlete and brilliant student with a bright future. But after a tragic accident destroyed over half of his body, Victor was kept alive by merging flesh with advanced technology. Today he is the Justice League co-founder called Cyborg. But is the young hero a man…or a machine that merely believes it’s a man?
MATTHEW: I may never get over retconning away Cyborg’s status as a founding New Teen Titan, but at least he’s got a higher profile in his new Justice League role. Really hoping this one is good, Pelletier art or no Pelletier art…
DAREDEVIL #11
Writer: Charles Soule
Artist: Ron Garney
Publisher: Marvel Comics
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: THE CREEPIEST DD STORY OF THE CENTURY, “DARK ARTS” CONTINUES!
• A serial killer who turns his victims into works of art is on the loose
• Can DAREDEVIL and BLINDSPOT stop him before he reveals his next “masterpiece”?
Rated T+
JON: Charles Soule’s Daredevil has been consistently solid and strikes many of the same tones I loved from Mark Waid’s epic run. Factor in Ron Garney’s stylish, noir-esque art, and this is a book definitely worth picking up.
FLINTSTONES #3
Writer: Mark Russell
Artist: Steve Pugh
Publisher: DC Comics
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: A field trip to the planetarium unexpectedly results in an alien invasion. As interplanetary spring breakers overwhelm Bedrock, Fred, Barney, and the Loyal Order of the Water Buffalos are called into action.
CHRIS: Let’s all take a moment of silence for Prez, one of DC’s great comics that is now cancelled. With that out of the way, at least we can still read Mark Rusell skewering society with Flinstones. This is the best Hanna Barbera comic out right now.
GLITTERBOMB #1
Writer: Jim Zub
Artist: Michael Russell
Publisher: Image Comics
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: Farrah Durante is a middle-aged actress hunting for her next gig in an industry where youth trumps experience. Her frustrations become an emotional lure for something horrifying out beyond the water… something ready to exact revenge on the shallow celebrity-obsessed culture that’s led her astray.
Fan-favorite JIM ZUB (WAYWARD, Thunderbolts) and newcomer DJIBRIL MORISSETTE-PHAN tear into the heart of Hollywood in GLITTERBOMB, a dramatic horror story about fame and failure.
MATTHEW: You had me at “dramatic horror story about fame.”
INJUSTICE GODS AMONG US YEAR FIVE #17
Writer: Brian Buccellato
Artist: Tom Derenick
Publisher: DC
Cover Price: $2.99
SOLICITATION: Superman is laid low by the effects of the Kryptonite poisoning administered by Hawkman. Batman and the Resistance continue to hold Cyborg as they try to transmit the video that will show the public how Superman slaughtered a group of unarmed demonstrators. Meanwhile, Luthor may have finally found a means to take down the Man of Steel.
ETIENNE: Despite not being a gamer, Injustice is the only DC title that has consistently held my attention for longer than a single issue. I am constantly amazed that they have managed to keep the ‘Superman gone bad’ theme going for 5 years and I still secretly hope that he rips out Batman’s heart like he did the Jokers way back in Year One.
KILL OR BE KILLED #2
Writer: Ed Brubaker
Artist: Sean Phillips
Publisher: Image Comics
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: Every killer has to have his first kill, and they’re never easy.
CHRIS: I thought I had an idea where this story was going while reading the first issue. Nope! Brubaker and Phillips create something unlike anything they’ve done before. This is one to definitely pick up!
MOON KNIGHT #6
Writer: Jeff Lemire
Artist: Greg Smallwood
Publisher: Marvel
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: “INCARNATIONS” STARTS NOW!
• Marc Spector broke his body to escape the prison Khonshu built for his mind…
• …And Stephen Grant awoke in New York City, ready to produce Marvel’s next box-office smash!
• It’s a happy ending-unless Marc is still trapped somewhere.
CHRIS: Marc Spector has really lost his mind. Now he’s in Hollywood. Perfect place for a crazy person! Jeff Lemire and Greg Smallwood are killing it on this book!
RED ONE #3
Writer: Xavier Dorison
Artist: Terry Dodson
Publisher: Image
Cover Price: $2.99
SOLICITATION: RED ONE returns in ‘UNDERCOVER’, Part 1! After a terrible fight, Soviet Agent Vera Yelnikov has managed to defeat the Carpenter, leaving him for dead at the bottom of the sea. Rid of this enemy, the Kremlin Elite Agent can now carry out her mission of becoming the new darling of America-as the superhero, RED ONE. But the young woman has another project in mind: in her undercover role as assistant to Director Lew Garner, to help make the film The Farm X!
ETIENNE: Finally! I have been waiting for this third issue since July last year. What made the wait even worse is that this had already been published in France over a year ago and Dodson’s art is so fantastic I nearly had to polish up my terrible French just so I could read it.
SUPERGIRL #1
Writer: Steve Orlando
Artist: Brian Ching
Publisher: DC Comics
Cover Price: $2.99
SOLICITATION: “REIGN OF THE CYBORG SUPERMAN” part one! Supergirl is back and working for the DEO to defend National City! As Kara Danvers, average American teenager and high school student, Supergirl must balance her life as a superhero with her new life on Earth. But some demons from her Kryptonian past are coming back to haunt her, and Kara will find herself face-to-face with her father: the sinister Cyborg Superman!
MATTHEW: It seems like such a long time since I looked forward to an issue of Supergirl… Welcome back, Kara! Your record is 81 issues: Can you beat that this time around?
UNCANNY X-MEN #12
Writer: Cullen Bunn
Artist: Greg Land
Publisher: Marvel
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: The X-Men join THE HELLFIRE CLUB?! To investigate a string of violent attacks perpetrated by mutants, the Uncanny X-Men ally themselves with their (former?) foes. But what they’re about to uncover may be too much for even their combined might to handle
ETIENNE: I am still picking up this comic in the hopes that one day Marvel will keep me happy by wheeling out Emma Frost again. The X-Men joining the Hellfire Club, drawn by Greg Land; Come on Marvel, if ever there was time to do it, this is it.
