In keeping with yesterday’s MS-QOTD, we’re once again focused on that which is absolutely necessary for the appreciation of a super-team, but this time at Marvel Comics. When I started reading The Avengers, I had no idea who any of those people were, but the thing that didn’t change was the weird red robot and his pretty girlfriend/wife. Even years later, it just doesn’t feel like the Avengers to me without The Vision, regardless of Iron Man, Captain America or Thor, and the success or failure of many lineups can come down to a lack of synthezoids. Of course, the Avengers have had many more membership changes than the JLA, which makes it even more complex to approach today’s Earth’s Mightiest query…
The MS-QOTD (pronounced, as always, “misquoted”) reminds Faithful Spoilerites of the old adage, “Second verse, same as the first,” asking: Which individual Avenger is absolutely necessary for the team to really be the Avengers for you?

Steve Rogers, Captain America. There are few Important ones besides him, but he’s who I first think of as Avengers leader.
Avengers seem to be able to survive with a Captain America, a Thor and an Iron Man, but for me, it would never and could never be a true Avengers without founding member Hank Pym, in one form or another..
Yes, Hank Pym and the Wasp too. Having a married couple in the team amidst the gods, androids, and aliens grounded the Avengers a bit into real life.
Scarlett Witch & the Vision seem to be the constants to me whether they are West Coast or East.
Thor, hands down. He has that epic quality that announces that The Avengers Have Arrived to me.
Iron Man or Vision will make do in a pinch.
Hawkeye. The smart mouthed carnie grew up in the avengers and became a hell of a leader in the bargain. He always asked the awkward questions … though i still dont see him killing hulk.
It does seem odd, what with his mid-80s characterization of “guy who was willing to divorce his wife because she was willing to kill.” Hawkeye as a pragmatic hunter who will willingly shoot people in the face seems to derive from the Bendis run on ‘New Avengers’ in the mid-2000s…
