Last month, Heritage Auctions put a CGC 5.5 copy of Action Comics #1 on the auction block. It sold yesterday for nearly one million dollars.
Originally, Heritage Auctions expected the sale of the first appearance of Superman to only hit $750,000.00, but the price skyrocketed to $956,000 – a new record for the title.
As the bidding went higher and higher we were grateful bidders recognized this copy as the gem it truly is,” said Lon Allen, Managing Director of Comics & Comic Art at Heritage. “Few copies of this comic survive, let alone come to auction with such a bright cover. It displays beautifully.”
Before hitting the auction block this week, this particular copy of Action Comics #1 was purchased in the 1990s for $26,000. The seller certainly made a smart decision in selling in this market.
Over the last decade several copies of Action Comics #1 have been put up for sale. Even with the dozen or so sales we know about, it is estimated that 100 copies of Action Comics #1 exist today.Still, the next time you are at that garage sale, or tearing down the wall of an older home, be on the look out for the next undiscovered copy.
