Minor correction: My mom was born in Chaska, the next town over from Shakopee, but then she grew up in Fargo. As for the family accent, it is absolutely true. My mom’s cousin Sherri sounds exactly like Marge Gunderson. Also, when I lived in St. Paul, I was just a couple of miles from the city limits of White Bear Lake. “Go bears!”
My opinion of the title has always been that it’s much more literal. The title is about how far people will go to get what they want, about how far things go awry, and about the physical distances that are traveled in the movie. “Fargo” is not a location. It’s a theme.
