An ensemble cast is only as good as its weakest link, and often, that link ends up being The New Guy.  But for every Cousin Oliver, there is another Lieutenant Worf, whose presence helps crystallize everything into a new, better form.  I may not be the biggest fan of Marvel’s Cable, but it’s his presence that kept the New Mutants characters in the public eye, and of course, there’s the quintessential example of Popeye, who arrived ten years into the Thimble Theatre’s comic strip run, and completely redefined the strip (and made a massive pop-culture impact besides) leading to today’s introductory query…

The MS-QOTD (pronounced, as always, “misquoted”) truly believes that the arrival of Worf is what made Deep Space 9 the show that it is, i.e., the best of Star Trek, asking: What single character from elsewhere would you add to your favorite ensemble to serve as proverbial New Guy?

Once upon a time, there was a young nerd from the Midwest, who loved Matter-Eater Lad and the McKenzie Brothers... If pop culture were a maze, Matthew would be the Minotaur at its center. Were it a mall, he'd be the Food Court. Were it a parking lot, he’d be the distant Cart Corral where the weird kids gather to smoke, but that’s not important right now... Matthew enjoys body surfing (so long as the bodies are fresh), writing in the third person, and dark-eyed women. Amongst his weaponry are such diverse elements as: Fear! Surprise! Ruthless efficiency! An almost fanatical devotion to pop culture!

And a nice red uniform.
