Regular Spoilerites may have heard a couple of our discussions about the impending move of ‘Supergirl’ from CBS to the CW, and our worries that not all of the cast would be willing/able to make a jump to a new network and also Vancouver. For my part, the only cast member that I’d be really hurt to lose is Cat Grant, the remote-but-somehow-still-encouraging stepmother figure. Calista Flockhart is the member of Kara’s supporting cast who is most consistent in her characterization, and even the weirdest lines and situations work better with Calista/Cat in them, leading to today’s networking query…
The MS-QOTD (pronounced, as always, “misquoted”) is very much “Meh” on the question of whether James Olsen is really key to Supergirl’s second season, asking: Is the idea of ‘Supergirl’ without Cat Grant a deal-breaker or no big deal at all?

Cat Grant has never been an essential character to me, not in Superman and I don’t think she will be in Supergirl either. I’ve seen that character type million times already to be honest.
I think the show would be different without her, but I don’t think it would really break the show to the point I could no longer watch. I just hope they don’t try to cram someone else into a similar role if she ends up not being available due to the move.
To be perfectly honest, though, I don’t really feel any major attachment to any characters on the series (aside from the main character, obviously) that I’d find the show broken without them. The dynamics would certainly change without this character or that character, and I think they’ve all been very well portrayed by their actors, but it wouldn’t break the show for me.
I’m still waiting for the series to make it to Netflix but from what I’ve heard, I think the show would survive without her.
