IT’S NEW COMIC BOOK DAY! #NCBD
The best day of the week just got a lot better with a new round of awesome comics arriving in stores this week. Staff members at Major Spoilers are here to help you with your comic book selection this week, with their roundup of comics they recommend.
ALL NEW ALL DIFFERENT AVENGERS #11
Writer: Mark Waid
Artist: Mahmud A. Asrar
Publisher: Marvel Comics
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: The Avengers–captives on the Stalag of Space! Its mysterious alien warden cannot be beaten by conventional means, but the Avengers’ prison break will take them into an even more dangerous realm!
Rated T+
JON: Although I’m still not completely sold on the All New All Different Avengers line-up, they are definitely starting to grow on me. That, coupled with the fact that Mark Waid rarely disappoints with his writing, is reason enough for me to pick up this issue.
CAPTAIN AMERICA STEVE ROGERS #2
Writer: Nick Spencer
Artist: Jesus Saiz
Publisher: Marvel Comics
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: As Steve battles a resurgent Hydra more dangerous than ever before, he must confront a ghost from his past!
Rated T+
JON: This is it – the follow-up to the Captain America issue that broke the internet. I have no idea where Nick Spencer is going with this story but I’m definitely coming along for the ride. Even if you felt betrayed by the last issue, at least pick this up for Jesus Saiz’s beautiful art.
STEPHEN: So the big reveal is explained without a long protracted storyline. Good? I’ll check this out just to see if this is as satisfying as the first issue.
CRYPTOCRACY #1
Writer: Van Jensen
Artist: Pete Woods
Publisher: Dark Horse Comics
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: For time beyond memory, the Nine Families watched from the shadows, believing themselves shepherds and manipulating whole societies as they saw fit. Nothing happened that they didn’t observe or control. Outsiders knew naught of the Families, much less threatened them. Until now.
MATTHEW: There are a lot of ways this premise can go horribly, horribly wrong. But, if it works, this could be amazing. You spins the wheel, ya takes yer chances!
DOCTOR WHO: THE NINTH DOCTOR #3
Writer: Cavan Scott
Artist: Adriana Melo
Publisher: Titan Comics
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: Yes, the Doctor, Rose and Captain Jack are once again entangled with the Slitheen – or, to be more precise, they’ve fallen into the middle of a Raxacoricofallapatorian civil war! You’ve never seen these skinsuit-wearing shapeshifters in their natural hunting grounds, nor witnessed them this terrifying! Trust no one!
MATTHEW: I didn’t realize how much I missed the adventures of the under-served Ninth Doctor. Now, where’s my Sixth Doctor miniseries, Titan?
EXTRAORDINARY X-MEN #11
Writer: Jeff Lemire
Artist: Humberto Ramos
Publisher: Marvel Comics
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: “APOCALYPSE WARS” CONTINUES IN “OMEGA WORLD” PART 4! Trapped one thousand years in the future on a world ruled by the genocidal tyrant Apocalypse, the X-Men are literally mutantkind’s last hope! But in fighting Apocalypse’s newest horsemen, the X-Men’s future is slipping away from them…especially when one of those horsemen is a Wolverine with a Venom symbiote!
ROB: Old Man Venom! Logan’s been hit with a symbiote and it looks like age has caught up to him, so this should be a fun brawl of a story. Especially since the team’s heavy hitter through the symbiote to start with.
HILLBILLY #1
Writer: Eric Powell
Artist: Eric Powell
Publisher: Albatross Funnybooks
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: An Appalachian Mountain fantasy epic that tells the story of Rondel. A lonely figure who wanders the wooded hills among witches and magical creatures as a folktale hero to those who dwell in this gritty dream world.
CHRIS: Eric Powell is back! And I’m dying to see if he can top Big Man Plans. I’m hearing great things about this one and that it is Powell’s take on the witch hunter genre. One to keep an eye on for sure.
JEM AND THE HOLOGRAMS #16
Writer: Kelly Thompson
Artist: Sophie Campbell
Publisher: IDW Publishing
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: DARK JEM PART-concludes! PIZZAZZ rejoins THE MISFITS in time to confront looming threat of Silica. But it will take everyone working together-and performing together-in one SUPER SHOW to stop Silica and The Sickness’s spread once and for all.
MATTHEW: This has been a really good arc for The Holograms, and I’m looking forward to seeing how it wraps up…
MOCKINGBIRD #4
Writer: Chelsea Cain
Artist: Kate Niemczyk
Publisher: Marvel
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: • Guest-Starring Hawkeye! • Clint Barton is about to be dissected by rogue scientists in an underwater base at the bottom of the Marianas Trench. It’s up to Bobbi to save him.
CHRIS: Another one of Marvel’s hidden gems that more people should be aware of, Mockingbird is a terrific spy story. It’s also a “puzzle box”, meaning the reader is learning how Bobbi got to where she was in issue one. Think of the movie “Memento” and you’re sort of close. The artwork is spectacular as well and I can’t wait to see the direction it’s headed.
SPIDER-MAN #5
Writer: Brian Michael Bendis
Artist: Sara Pichelli
Publisher: Marvel Comics
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: BLACK CAT makes her move against SPIDER-MAN!!!
ROB: Poor Miles, having to deal with an extra powerful and very angry Black Cat as she takes over the underworld. Going to be interesting seeing him deal with the more experienced villains of the 616 universe.
SPIDER-MAN DEADPOOL #6
Writer: Scott Aukerman
Artist: Reilly Brown
Publisher: Marvel Comics
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: • Deadpool goes Hollywood! See the M w/the M on the set of his own MOVIE!
• And he brings his pal Spidey along, as he has lots of experience selling out!
• All-Star Special Issue-written by Scott Aukerman of TV’s Comedy Bang Bang!
Rated T+
JON: This series has been a lot of fun so far. I’m a little surprised to see that both Joe Kelly and Ed McGuinness are being replaced so here’s to hoping that Aukerman and Brown can keep the momentum going.
TMNT BEBOP & ROCKSTEADY DESTROY EVERYTHING #5
Writer: Ben Bates, Dustin Weaver
Artist: Ryan Browne, Sophie Campbell, Dustin Weaver, Ben Bates
Publisher: IDW Publishing
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: Time has been irreparably damaged and the fabric of reality is torn apart! Only a trip to visit the Time Lords in the 79th dimension holds any hope. But is time-traveller Renet still alive? Are the Turtles? Is anyone??
ROB: So far this has lived up to everything I hoped it could be, and I am stoked to see what idiocy our title pair are going to be getting up to next. Here’s hoping we’ll also get to see some more of Pepperoni.
TRANSFORMERS SINS OF WRECKERS #5 (OF 5)
Writer: Nick Roche
Artist: Nick Roche
Publisher: IDW Publishing
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: THIS IS THE END! Will PROWL get his comeuppance? Will TARANTULAS conquer all? Will any of the WRECKERS survive? It’s wreck and rule one last time, with everything on the line!
CHRIS: Man, it’s been delayed but the wait is over and I have to tell you, it was worth it! The sequel to Last Stand of the Wreckers has been nothing short of amazing, epic, wonderful and any other adjective you want to use. I can’t gush enough about how happy I am with this. SPOILERS: A lot of characters die…
