How much do I love Broken Lizard?  Well, I’ve seen their sophomore outing, ‘Club Dread’, at least a dozen times and I actually looked forward to their revamp of ‘The Dukes Of Hazzard.’  Still, my favorite of their outings is probably ‘Beerfest’, the ragtag story of a group of everyday schlubs who become a world-class drinking team to save the family brewery…  or something.  There’s a lot going on in that film, most of which mercilessly parodies the Inspirational Sports Movie genre, with some unexpectedly deep character work for a comedy/parody, leading us to today’s Eye-Of-The-Tiger query…

The MS-QOTD (pronounced, as always, “misquoted”) has always wanted to take the Critical Hit crew and crush some bar trivia quiz, asking: If you were to gather a group of your friends to star in an inspiring overcome-the-odds tale, what hypothetical festival, competition or race would be Yourfest?

Once upon a time, there was a young nerd from the Midwest, who loved Matter-Eater Lad and the McKenzie Brothers... If pop culture were a maze, Matthew would be the Minotaur at its center. Were it a mall, he'd be the Food Court. Were it a parking lot, he’d be the distant Cart Corral where the weird kids gather to smoke, but that’s not important right now... Matthew enjoys body surfing (so long as the bodies are fresh), writing in the third person, and dark-eyed women. Amongst his weaponry are such diverse elements as: Fear! Surprise! Ruthless efficiency! An almost fanatical devotion to pop culture! And a nice red uniform.

Probably some kind of Tabletop tournament, or possibly a Comics Trivia competition. With our united power, we could emerge victorious!

  2. A huge multi-genre LARP event, complete with a battleground and competition aspect. The twist is parts of the film would be seen from the perspective of how it is imagined by those participating, so a scene might shift from someone in cardboard “armor” with a NERF sword to a full-on armored knight with shining metal sword.

My group would be the “outcasts” who aren’t choosing sides exactly, like there may be a pure “Star Wars”-esque group that loathes the “Lord of the Rings”-like group and vice-versa, but our group would be all-around fantasy and sci-fi fans rather than elitist snobs who only accept one franchise or genre as “the best”, so the specialized groups would look down on the fact we’d have a sword-and-sorcery wizard side by side with a cyborg space ninja and Batman.

Me and my friends as some silly reality show or raffle winners wining every single match in Wrestlemania against Hulk hogan, The Rock, Steve Austin, Shawn Michaels, The Undertaker, Brock Lesnar, HHH, John Cena and Roman Reigns. You know, just to stick it to Vince.

I have always wanted to do a survivor friends and family, where your whole tribe is made up of the people you know. Nobody can pull your strings or backstab like the people who know you best!
